Ultima Underworld - The Stygian Abyss
Feel free to comment and discuss this game here. Also, if you have any useful tips or tricks don't hesitate to share them with the others! Thanks!
Download and Review (if available) |
This is a great game, i played it when i was younger but once again could never finish it, now that i have the manual and can cast spells with the spell list tho ill have no worries
the walkthrough might come in handy too good job on this one guys :) |
There's one nice and very useful trick in there that could be considered as a half-cheat, as that's only an exploit of a bug in the game:
If you have some potion carrying around (healing, mana or time-stop potion - that one is mighty :D ), you can do the following to use it forever without getting away - throw it on the floor and cast some lightning or fireball spells on the potion, it should turn to ashes now. Get up this ashes again - they still have the same effect as the potion and you can use them FOREVER! :D Just be sure to not throw the ashes somewhere on the screen, as they'll "broke" then and disappear. |

"Underworld Adventures is a project to recreate Ultima Underworld on modern operating systems (e.g. Win32, Linux or MacOS), using the original game files. It uses OpenGL for 3D graphics, the SDL library for platform specific tasks and Lua for scripting. " |
A perfect game...
Bought a couple years ago after hunting it down for six months. Say, isn´t ultima underworld 2 also abandonware? I would also have in pdf: map, manual, and play manual, from the original cd. Needed? |
Hey, sure, it's certainly the game that belongs here! :D
I have it too and I must say, it's more than worth it. |
Then I´d be willing to upload it,
along with a review when I get the time... Would that be :ok: |
i played Ultima Underworld when I was younger..... there are some very useful items: dragon scale boots, levitation ring, etc... well, i`ve been looking for UU2 for a long time and finally i found it in ABANDONIA!!!!!!! i`m going to download it, and enjoy a lot!!!! :D thanks guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :ok:

I get an error code D001 when trying to play this on DOSbox. I tried googling it and I have no idea what it could be. Any suggestions?
|
I got that one to but i figured it out:
When you download it and open the winzip file, you have to press the extract button not just drag it into a folder beacause it wont make the appropriate folders. :) |

Could you be a little more specific? I looked in the folders and it seems to be all as it should.

if you're in dosbox that shouldn't be too much trouble, since it should trick the game into thinking whatever you mount as c to be c, so you can get round that quite easily. for instance, mine does: mount c c:\DOSProgs\ so if anything is at c:\DOSProgs\gamexyz it'll act as if it's at C:\gamexyz when in dosbox. |
Besides being a fantastic game, the engine does stuff DooM has never done, and it came out before Wolf3D!
And a few years later, an enhanced version of the engine was used to make System Shock. A very intelligent FPS indeed. |
There's a small utility patch around that lets ypu play both this, and UW2 in Win 2000 and XP without any dosbox or anything else. Works great.
|
The patch mentioned can be found at:
http://www.sircabirus.com/download/uw2wnt.zip works perfect with vdmsound for sound, finished it a few months ago under win2k. |
This isn't a game, this is life.
|
it says my pc is not compatable when i try to run it in dosbox any suggestions?

My poor axe wielding druid woman is stuck trying to get the stupid Blade part for the Sword of Justice. I've tried 'grabbing' all the vine covered walls in the most SE corridor which leads to downstairs, the corridor and rooms of the Thieves Storerooms, and almost all the walls in every room around the moat I know I need to drain to gain access to the Blade. What am I overlooking? I'm dying of frustration here, thanks! |

I believe the switch is very close to the area with blue stripes on this map. and i also htink you need to have search skill to find it. |
Any patch that allows me to go backwards?
:not_ok: |
DosBox fixes that problem Nokkis.
|
The Stygian Abyss is one of my all time favorite RPG's for PC. I enjoyed the break through ability to swim through water, walk on lava with scale boots and trade items I had collected along the way. Music by The Fat Man creates a mysterious setting.I hope to play it all over again using the DOS box. Sweet memories. :kosta:
|
I also played this game when I was quite young. I remember it taking sooooo much space on my HD and in Expanded memory... Wow.... I could never finish it. Even lately with all the cheats and walkthroughs.... This is a very hard game, very challenging but very rewarding.
|
this one is not all that hard. the only thing i missed was the dragon skins for the boots (so you can walk over fire). the rest is preety easy. there are a lot of side puzzles to finish which are quite hard, but they are not necessary for the game ending.
|
This game for some reason freezes whenever I try to go to sleep using the bedroll. I've tried using both dosbox and the winXP patch but they're no use. Anyone got any tips?
|
:Brain: This is the very game that got me into the Ultima series. It's nothing less than a sparkling gem! Even today (forget about those photo realistic, 'real physics' and no game play) This is THE game of all times. I used to run it on a win98se machine, but for some reason I couldn't levitate or swim north and west (I think it was). Now I've got me an XP machine and dos-box (a brilliant piece of sw which I'm beginning to learn). I started the game and it had full sound/music, something I had trouble getting in win98. I hope that I can go swiming and flying about like any other decent human being now.
BTW and OT: Although Ultima IX had some moments, that big bug doesn't come close to this one and VIII. I'm currently trying to get down to playing VII (one I have never played before). Maybe if I tore down the calendar and took out the batteries of my watch and clock... |
Quote:
as for the WIN 98 - why did you run it in WIN? tghe game was ment for dos. and if you had win 98 all oyu would have to do is either make a propper shortcut or even better make a bootdisk. it would run very well there. i had win95 on one and have win 98 on the other computer and both ran the ultima fine. no problems with sound at all. eventhought one of the computers has a newer processor. |
Well, I did run it in pure dos, but I found that I could also get the same result in win. Anyway, the sound issue and the Northwest bug appeared during dos-sessions as well. Don't know why or anything, and now that I've got dos-box, I just want to forget that awful OS that 98 was.
Edit: ABOUT THE NORTHWEST BUG: I played one of my 'bugged' savegames on a slower computer, and the bug apparently had gone(!?). Had a similar experience with Daggerfall. Seems that certain old games just don't like being rushed. I don't know... |
This is a great game I have played it through (and also UUW2) when I was younger.
It is also the first game I've ever bought from my own money! And I bought it together with my first CD-ROM drive, so that makes a lot of premieres together :) Cooking stew for rotworm, casting levitation spells, whacking doors endlessly until they break up.. so cool. |
i cant get this game to install what am i doing wrong? unzipped the file and clicked the install file it takes me to dos window where i put all the sound options in but then when i click ok to install nothing happens

I got a problem, I got the picture of tom and went back to level 5 to give it to judy but she dont seem to be in the big room with the lava anymore? Has she liek wandered off somewhere or has something gone wrong with the game?
Also wheres the secret room on level 4 with the gold plate in it? I got my search skill up quite hi and clicked on just about every wall but I cant find it. |
Although that shouldn't happen normally and never did whenever I played the game, Judy might have fallen off into lava, which brought an end to her "existence". That means you would need to load a game before she did (you kept more than one savegame, didn't you?) and pray that you don't need to re-start the game from beginning.
|
Oh no... I got old saved games but it all depends on when she fell in. Man that sux :tai:

If you are using Dosbox, you should edit the dosbox.conf file with the notepad and find a place where it says "ems=false" and change it to "ems=true", without the quotes. This should fix the problem. If you are using Win XP, click w/ the right button over uw.exe and change it's properties. Change the EMS memory for a suitable number, more than 500Kb is good, but you must have 480Kb free. If you are using pure Dos, you should have a program that comes with it called QEMM.SYS or EMM386.SYS. To use them you should add a line at the CONFIG.SYS file. To use these, you must have HIMEM.SYS too. Go to your config.sys and add the following lines: DEVICE=<Path>HIMEM.SYS DEVICE=<Path>EMM386.SYS 480 PAth is where the file is. 480 is how much memory you will allocate. You should allocate more. (taken from the manual). Hope you have fun with this gorgeous piece of game. Farewell |
A few people touched on the greatness of this game already, but I just wanted to reiterate it.
This game is a masterpiece. It was/is a terrific 3d engine before there were any other games even close to what these development team created. This game was miles ahead of everyone at the time of it's release. I played through it 3x at different points in my life --- awesome, awesome game! I am actually disappointed by the user ranking as this was the best ultima game out of the entire series (with props to ultima 4, 7, underworld 2) |

Yes, this game is awesome. When I first started to play it, I was surprised at the complex graphics and game system it has, comparing to Wizardy VII - Crusaders of the Dark Savant that I played before through. Ultima Underword is so much more advanced that Wizardry VII, heck it's even comparable to Doom II (this one had better level design than first Doom) and this in the same year of releasing as Wizardry VII - 1992. Origin was always the top nose back then at the breakthrough ideas...
|
Random tip:
What makes this game special even nowadays is the interation with information inside the game. This means that you get a (word), for example at the beginning, and then you must use it with someone you have no idea who is. To not forget it and where you got it, make a note on the map with a number, like 1, then at the side, write "1. Where I got (word)" and then, you can either use a small paper to write the (word) down or write it in the 9th page of your automap. It feels great to remember your experiences just by looking at a page with your notes... It makes you want to play the game once more, but to get the experience of playing it without knowing things is unique... Don't spoil it reading walkthroughs just because you can't open a door. |
My method of fighting:
This method was developed after a short time dealing with the beasts in the abyss and is pretty effective. Normally you will get out unharmed and very happy :) (Note: This supposes you use melee weapons and it is not very effective against monsters using strong missile weapons/spells) 1. Spot the enemy. When it's more than one, concentrate on one, don't be brave, or foolish. 2. Keep your distance, then load you attack. When the power gem is bright green, rush towards the enemy and attack. 3. Don't stay near him! You can either continue running to escape his attacks or walk backwards being out of range of his weapon. You can turn and run too. 4. Spot the enemy again and prepare your strike. Charge against him and strike, then avoid his attacks. Repeat this until it is dead. It takes some time to master but you can kill the fiercest monster easily (it may take some time, this is the most irritating factor that unfocus you). The gargoyle in the top of the screen shows your opponent's life. Bright green is good health, yellow means it is hurt and red means seriously injured. You can say this is 'Hit and Run' but I prefer to call it 'Fight for life'. |
Hey folks!
I've read about some inventory problems occuring in the disk version of the game so decided to patch the game. After i did so, i started getting "Underworld internal error. Problems in object list" error whenever i split some certain stacks in my inventory or loading the game. Is it the patch??? I mean have everyone used THIS version, i mean the abandonia distributed version, without the need of any patches and without any problems till the end? If so, i shall not patch and play it all the way through. Considering the value of my time, I wanted to consult you folks... Thanks |
Hey guys!
I absolutley love this game, I used to have it on my old PC, and play it all the time. Then my family got rid of it :wallbash: I couldnt find it anywhere at all, and almost forgot the name, then it came to me, and Ive been searching for it every since. I came across this site and downloaded it, but its not working? and Im going crazy!! |
Sorry to hear that, but what exactly is not working? Any error messages? Empty or otherwise corrupted archives? No sound? What sort of problems do you have with this game?
|
The problem is that i do not want to experience the "inventory bug" mentioned in many texts on the net about the game. I have downloaded the official patch but i started getting the error messages about my inventory. Check my previous post...
I wanted to know if anyne had an inventory or any item related bug problem with this version of the game, unpatched... If not, ie. the game is beatable as is, the i won't install the patch and play the abandonian version of the game. My only concern is getting a quest item vanished right in the middle of the game because of some stupid bug. Rounding all up: Is this version that we've all downloaded from here bug-free? If not, what can you suggest about patching? |

You click the icon? Ok then: What operation system do you have? You shouldn't try to run the game in xp. For xp users, there is dos box (downloadable here at Abandonia. Even Windows95/98 have their issues with this game. So, try to run it either in dos box or in pure dos. For that you would probably need a dos boot disc, also downloadable here at Abandonia.
For how to use/configure dos box and the boot disc, there's lots of help already on this forum, as well as a FAQ. |

It would appear that the message you're receiving is just to tell you that your savegame has an item list error which CAN (will?) manifest itself into helpful AND essential items being destroyed (the Taper of Sacrifice vanished in my game), thus making the game un-finishable. Now that you've patched the game I suggest starting over w/ a new character. If that is not feasible then save scrupulously, checking your inventory before and after each save. Also backup 'good' savegames to a different location on your hard drive periodically so you won't lose all of your progress. Note: the patched .EXE file has a newer date (Feb 9, 1993; 4:09 am) than the one in this downloadable version (Mar 11, 1992; 6:20 pm) so it seems that the game on this site is the original, unpatched version. If you haven't played yet or made much progress patch the game then start (or start over)! |
A somewhat good news for Uw lovers.
Recently, while I was searching for stuff about Uw, I found that a game was meant to be UW3. Since they didn't get the autoral rights, they did one very much similar. The name is Arx Fatalis, I really recommend it. Although it is not a abandonware, being published around 2003, it is easy to find. I was nostalgic while playing the first level of it. Farewell |

I'm stuck. Wonder if anyone read this and can help. Spoilers ahead? Nothing dramatic though. On Level 7 there is a portcullis in the NorthWest section that I must cross to reach the prison and I have no idea how to open it. I tried the massive door by the other side and of no key will fit it (nor knockings). Searching through walkthroughs I came to learn that I'm supposed to get arrested at some point, but I cannot talk to guards or anyone on the other side ofr the portcullis. They simply try to attack me but are not opening the door. Is this a bug? What is it I have been missing? Thanks much for the help. |
If you're talking about the portcullisses between the prison cell section and the guards' room: I think I recall that the moment you were trapped, the guard would automaticly talk to you. That is, unless you've already killed him.
If you're talking about the one leading into the guards' room, there should be a key somewhere on that level, and anyway, there is a backdoor into the same room. |
|
Hello, I had seen this excellent site already, thank you. My problem is solved but the link above got me confused, here's why: SPOILERS AHEAD, DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVEN'T PLAYED OR IF YOU DON'T WANT HELP ON LEVEL 7. I couldn't get across the magical maze wihout dying. I had found the lava pit door, but mostly fooled around jumping into caverns instead of going down level 8 because I had my orb rocks already and thought I wanted to finish Level 8 later. That was my big mistake. I had killed all the guards at 3 entrances to the prison while searching for the medallion. It is as simple as they never let me go away finding that medallion in the first place. But I could never enter the "cells" at the end, and so because I was stuck between maze and cells (I had look everything else I could), I went to read a walkthrough to help me out. Here is what is confusing about the walkthrough: They say that the first thing to do is to reach the cells and get trapped. I did everything else cos they would not open the door. In the same paragraph they say you must defeat Tyball first to get keys to prison. So I though he was inside those cells somewhere and that the guards must trapped me first. Reading it again I discovered my mistake about Level 8 and maze crown. I went through everything until Tyball's death. That is where I got 2 keys, each for a different section of the prison. I came back, opened that darn door, and no one was willing to talk to me. It finished a bloodbash. There was never a Dante either. So basically the walkthrough should be adding a parenthesis saying "(you don't need to get trapped if you are able to find the crown for the maze yourself and reach the prison keys)". There is a way to finish that level without Troll and gold, and had I known I would have not panicked wondering If I had killed that Troll. Thanks for all your help |
By the way this game is such a legend, they could almost do a remake in contemporary 3d. I really played it for historical reasons, when I saw the date that it was made. To me it is the first game that is exactly like contemporary games, a mix of all sorts of things, a little bit of killing, a little bit of treasure and clue findings, a little bit of adventure, all this in full virtual 3d world. Let me be more precise: I know you all think UW1 is the first 3d virtual world, that it beats ID's Wolfenstein 3D. Truth is that ID remains the inventors of full-textured virtual-world 3d. Its directors did it first with Catacomb Abyss (or Catacomb 3D) for another company at the time (late 1991-early 1992), and they were working on Wolfenstein 3D at the same time as UW1. But UW1 is so much more than slash-shoot, and its design more complex for the time. I see the games of today, at least the best games, much more coming from UW1. And if you're a newbie don't be discouraged by how tough it seems at the beginning. The big clue for winning this game is to keep killing soft enemies, bypasssing hard stuff and going down levels, until you gain strenght, experience and mana. I've seen top 100 games of alltimes put Doom at number 1 and totally not mention UW1. I plea for future critics to play this and know what they are actually dealing with. Cheera |
That was me above, I actually exist as registered as Talkie. |
From wikipedia article on Wolfenstein 3d (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolfenstein_3d):
Quote:
|
Right, and then: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catacomb_3-D So they took it from UW1 and release this very fast in 1991???? Whatever the answer, that was the first public-available 3D-textured Virtual World. UW1 might have shown demos but their games was not complete yet. Let's be fair. Cheers, Talkie |
The concept of 3D exists in videogames since almost as long as videogames were invented. The people behind ID themselves had been experimenting with 3D since many years, but the big problem was how to get everything textured and look like a real virtual world (walls, ceilings, shadows, accessories, etc). So it is possible these people saw an EARLY DEMO of UW1 but they were quite an advance in 3D so it is no wonder the guy said "wow I can make these walls move faster". It's not like they were newbies. Than by doing Catacomb 3D they reduced the memory to 16 colours and kept it very simple, with very repetitive wall designs. But basically they merely added textures to models they had already been working with, so it's not like they saw UW1 and though "wow...the very first 3D game...". Nah, they were interested in UW1 were able to get these nice textured surroundings move. They simplified this to the max and released Catacomb 3D but in doing so they released the first textured 3D world. They deserve this credit, because however "texture" might have been a central problem at the times, for them it was still just the last problem they needed to resolve. In a sense you could say that both ID and UW1 are equal partners in this invention, especially if Catacomb 3D was already exploiting UW1, but they both have different engines. For the general public it remains that Catacomb 3D was the first offer, and to this date strangely obscured by history. Cheers, Talkie PS: not to forget the premiss of my first reply which was that UW1 itself is much neglected by compilers. |

Gregor, We're talking two things here: - fully textured-3d (the walls are designed to imitate reality, you can tell if it is bricks or wood, or...) - realtime 3d movement (you can move in every ways you want). Point And Click, that is way, way older. Cheers, Talkie |

About Arx Fatalis...
If you play a bit, I mean a great part of it, you will find some "crossovers" with Uw. It will take a huge time to complete the game, and a lot more without a walkthrough. Just to mention, Tyball and Garamon accidentally released the Slasher of Veils (that was meant to be a kind of boss in the real Ultima 9 game) and something similar to it happened in Arx, that I'm not going to tell you. Another thing, though not as important, is the use of runes that can be found scattered and they are blue stones with golden inscriptions, very much like uw. The main quest is not to allow a very powerful being to be released in the world. Another similarity. The cheat gregor mentioned is like this. "Write" UUW with your mouse when casting a spell that the world will look a bit different. A noticeable crossover are the Sisters of Edernum in Arx. They resemble the lizardmen in Uw1, although are snakes rather than lizards. Another thing is in the combat system. There are three types of attack, just like in Uw, but this is enough for now. Just to make it clear... Uw is far better than Arx for me. I'm just saying it is a honorable honor to Uw, that's all... |
This is THE game that finally got me gaming on a PC. Previously I was a Commodore Amiga and C64 fan. Closest to UW on the Amiga, though, was Dungeon Master. While a great game, your steps were still the same 1-unit blocks that we'd been romping through dungeons with since Wizardry I, so the (relatively) smooth action sure appealed to me.
Anyway, my first post on the forums, and I've emailed box scans to Tom for the collection. |

EDIT: When you start a new character/game, you come to a point when your character gets random attribute points. Thing is this is far from random. Take note of the points, complete the creation, scrap the character and restart the creation. Take note etc etc etc. Now, for some strange reason, if you exit the game completly and restart it, the _very same_ sequence you noted down will re-appear. Find one set of attribute points you're happy with on the list you made earlier, and keep scrapping your characters until that set shows up. Then it's off for some adventure. |
Oh, this game brings back memories... I hope some of you don't mind the long love letter I'll write to my beloved Ultima Underworld. As my dear norwegian friend Mighty Midget once stated, this was also the game that hooked me up with the Ultima series. To be honest, I didn't even know the series existed before it. Hosanas, hosanas... In addition, it was the search for this game that drove me to Abandonia!! :guitar: And there was much rejoicing!
It all started when we had an old PC and my stepdaddy got a CD full of games as a present from some coworker. One of them was this one, but it didn't seen to work as I never got it to open correctly and so the CD was driven into the shadows of forgetfullness. Some years passed and the nerdier I became the more I started fooling around with computers. When we got a better PC, we were cleaning and trowing away old floppy disks and CDs when I found this one and thought: "and if I tried to run it now?". I was 15, the game was already at least 5 years old, maybe this time. And it worked!! Boy, was I happy! ^_^ I just couldn't stop playing it. I was doing pretty good even without any walkthroughs (we didn't have internet conection yet). And when I was getting into the depths of the Stygian Abyss, when glory was just before me... the PC crashed... <_< I lost most of the game I was playing :wallbash: being left just with some archives I made a backup of. But, alas, when the PC was finally fixed, the game didn't seen to want to run anymore. And so it went again into shadows of forgetfullness... *obscure sentimental background music* Since it didn't run anymore, I tried other games of the Ultima series, specially the one made for Sega Master System, a console which I surprisely owned so could rent the game. I have to say that all of them made me addicted, but I still wanted to play the Stygian Abyss again. After some time, the CD also disappeared. I forgot all about it when on April at a bar some friends started talking about the series and I decided to look for it again and found this lovely website. Playing it again made me realise I still love it! It's a great game really! Thank you so much FreeFreddy for uploading it. :kosta: There's, of course, much to be said about my love for this marvelous series. However I'll do it from time to time one love letter at a time ^_^ |
I use Debian Linux and Dosbox, all worked fine, UU is definitily an RPG worth playing.
The Problem is, that everytime i sleep the game freezes. I could sleep several times, until the Ghost showed up twice, but now it doesn't work anymore. I saw someone posted the same Problem, does someone know an answer? |
One of the best cheats for the game is to delete the shades.dat file. If you do so. You don't have to carry the torch/lamp and many oil-cans. It is always lit everywhere. As I can remember. I had problems in on Level 6. The level where you cannot cast spells. To create food. And you had never enough oil the relight the torch or lamp.
An other cheat is to copy some of the 'save'-files into another save-files which is at start of the game for example. This way, you have al the power and goodies direct at the beginning. This works also for UW2. |
I remember playing this game as a kid, and man I did not know what I was doing, but I had fun doing it! I didn't know anything about mantras, or even how to wear armor, but somehow I got to lv 5 iirc.
|
I've discovered that in Ultima Underworld, the human fist is far tougher than iron or steel.
It is possible to bash down doors with your fist, and while mere maces and swords tend to get damaged very quickly when used for bashing, your fist takes no damage at all. Which means most of the time you don't have to bother looking for stupid keys - just bash the damn door down with a series of blows from your mighty punch! Admittedly I was lazy and finished the game unarmed in easy mode, perhaps in standard mode when you use your fist you take damage to your health or something... |
I loved this game and I have a friend who I think would rank it as one of the best of all time. Sadly, I could not get very far because this one - like pretty much all older 3d games - made me feel sick when I played. It is a testament to how good it was that I played for as long as I did.
I wish someone would think of remaking this with modern generation graphics. |
there is a remake project (google it), but i belive they are not finished yet.
if you liked this one maybe you should try Arx Fatalis - much better graphics, kind of similar story (but different). it's a tribute to Ultima and using certain cheats it also changes the screen so it looks like you are playinig UW Stygian Abiss. |
I have a copy of the CD versions of both Underworld 1 and 2 and the versions of the files are both more recent than the version you have here and the patch available on the net. I would be happy to provide it to you if you want to upload it so people dont have to worry about using an older version from here.
|
yeah that would be awesome, can you host it somewhere?
|
Sure if you could tell me how to do that. Is there someplace I can upload it here? If not, can you point me to a common way to host files?? The files are only 3 and 5 megs though so I could probably just email them.
|
For common file hosting, there are a few sites out there, 4shared is one, and there you can upload the files for free too.
If you want to give it to AB, which is even better, contact the admins (at least The_Fifth_Horseman and Romano are around pretty often) and they'll give you further instructions on how to u/l to AB. |
Gosh golly gee, I really want to play the Ultima Underworld series again.
It was so underrated for its time, but it's one of the most well-done, complex dungeon-crawler I've ever played. I love this game to no end. When I was younger playing it, my brother would always try to scare me by making loud noises in the background during the intense parts - as if the game itself wasn't suspenseful and creepy enough with the amazing musical soundtrack. :) |
Windows Vista
I recently changed my computer, and the game doesn´t run on windowa vista. Has anybody out there developed a patch so that it does?

The "patch" you need is called DOSBox, and you will find a link to the download site here http://www.abandonia.com/en/node/23027

Ultima Underworld 1 - item problems
I'm playing UU1, and have gotten fairly far. The problem is that sometimes item's dissapear when i save my game. I keep an eye on my stuff, so i've delt with it.
The problem now is, in all my save files, i SHOULD be wearing a chain shirt, instead the 'paper doll' displays a yellow box, and when i 'look' at it, where i should be wearing a chain shirt, it says 'day old piece of bread'. I move it, and sure enough, the curser turns into a day old piece of bread, and the paper doll displays an unarmored me. Ok, so i lost a chain shirt, i can live with that, but it seems i have also lost the 4 or so 'stones' worth of weight associated with a chain shirt. So not only did my armor turn into a piece of bread, my carrying capacity went down, from 54 to 50. I've saved new files, taken off all items, put them back on, saved again...nothing seems to get that weight back. Any suggestions? Thanks |
The major cause of this is hording. If you have a large number of items (30 - 40 items total) in one location (one room, one bag, one pack), the game may corrupt some of your objects.
I personally always keep my bags tidy, with none of them holding more than 8 items. For example a backpack with 7 items and one chest, inside the chest I put another 7 items and so on. The solution is, that objects are stored in memory one after the other. If the inventory of one item gets too big, it overwrites the memory of the beginning of the next item. You can continue to play the game without re-starting, but you may not be able to finish the game if a quest item is corrupted. |
never had this bug pop up. however i did have rooms in every level where i would put the loot (food and some gems). I didn't use many things and the ones i could i just sold for money.
|
Some old versions of UU have this bug, I saw it. A version on this site is free of bugs. Download and play it. Don’t use your old savegames, you have to start from the beginning to avoid this bug.
|
low rating?
I was wondering why this game has such a low rating (3.2). I absolutely loved this game and was completely sucked into it...I was around 12 years old and it's the first RPG I played. It set the benchmark for me and only Ultima Underworld 2 and Betrayal at Krondor came close. I even enjoyed playing it all over again recently using DosBox (and it takes quite a long time to finish this game).
|
Most games' public ratings tend to even out at around three, because some people will find them awesome, and some will find them to be a piece of - well, you know what I'm talking about. I find that the reviewer's score is generally a better indication of how good the game is. :)

You need to do more than just install DOSBox and double click the game file. The easiest way to run games in DOSBox is to copy the game file, and just right click the DOSBox icon and click paste. Then there's the proper way, and I really can't get into detail on that. Check the DOSBox site. |
Quote:
If you have any problems with the examples or questions the guide does not answer, I'll be happy to answer any and all of them. |
Quote:
Anyway, do you think my method (AKA: The Lazy Man's Way) of just copying game EXEs (or BATs) and pasting them right right onto the DOSBox EXE might be the reason some won't work properly? Most works just fine, though. By ''most'' I mean about 90%. But that could be other reasons. Oh, and is that a Power Dolls background you have? (I'm not saying I'm a Power Dolls fan; Haven't played a single one of them... I'm just wondering.) |
As you said, it works in 90% of the games.
But as soon a game needs a more specific directory/subdir/ path, you're screwed. Simply learn how to work with dosbox, it's easy after all. BTW: You don't need to copy and whatever you do for the games that can work the lazy way, simply click left on and drag/drop the game's run file on the dosbox shortcut. As you like it lazy, that's the ultimate lazy procedure, as long it works anyway. |
Quote:
About the lazy way: if I were going to just drag & drop, I would need to either have the DOSBox shortcut in the same folder as the game, or have 2 folders up simultaneously. Which I suppose isn't too much of a chore. :woot: But yeah, I pretty much know how to work with DOSBox already. My biggest problem is that it takes so much time, especially as I have the DOS games folder in my folder (which is on the desktop). Such long lines I need to put in (like \documents and settings\user\*user*\ etc.). I suppose I could just move it to C:\, but whatever. :p |
Quote:
Let's see how hard it is to run dosbox manually... You create a c:\oldgames\ You edit dosboxconf file and add under [autoexec]: [autoexec] mount c c:\oldgames c: Done, dosbox will run with a c: mounted. You unzip your games in c:\oldgames\folder , run dosbox and input cd folder name Oh my, that was hard work. *sigh* |
Quote:
Oh, I didn't know about the autoexec-thing! :omg: Thank you. |

Because it's sold on Amazon, Ultima Underworld - The Stygian Abyss is now not available for download.

We made a mistake while evaluating this games status. Download is now back up again.

I have Vista and I'm trying to play the game through DosBox. Two problems. One the game is waaay too slow. I think I can fix that by altering cycles, though. However, the solution to the next problem continues to elude me. Much of the screen is black. I have to run my cursor back and forth to see anything. It's like I'm wiping the blackness away if that makes any sense. Anybody know what to do about that?
|
To increase the cycles press CTRL+F12 (F+11 to decrease them). Around 9000 should be enough for Ultima Underworld.
For the second problem, open the file dosbox.conf and set right a the beginning output= to ddraw so it looks like this output=ddraw and see if that helps it. |
one of the best games of all time, I'd rather adventure in underworld over the elder scrolls series any day!
|
I played this game as a child. Sadly it's not well known today given it's age. It did have that scary theme to it, especially if you didn't know what you were doing.
|
Screen shots for UW1
Does anyone know where the screen shots on the game page for Ultima Underworld I came from? It seems to be much higher resolution than I am seeing playing this game in DosBox!
|
The screenshots in the review are not enlarged and so the edges have become undetectable because of the tiny size.

PC-ness über alles
It's just ridiculous that in a Medieval-like game, one of the characters is black...

Rug, are you suggesting that there should be more or less diversity in skin tone?
For the time, this game had a pretty good choice of characters, and certainly for the player character it's important to remember that you're from another world (earth!), and therefore not from any particular local region. That being said, the world of ultima is an anachronism stew and should in no way be considered an accurate portrayal of medieval times. |
Are there shops in this game or anywhere to sell your loot? I am unsure what to keep.
Also, the movements with the mouse seem kind of choppy. I realize this is an ancient game, but wonder if this is normal? I am using DosBox. Update - I used Ctrl F12 to speed it up, and that seemed to work. The walls, however, seem to sort of "waver" as I pass by. I suppose I am expecting too much. |
You can barter (trade) with friendly NPC characters. Some will have gold, others food, or equipment that you might find useful.
|
Trapped! Forever?
I have ran into a huge, huge problem. I am on level 7 and have reached the prisons and the tombs but I haven,t found all vital objects on the previous levels yet. I didn,t think it would matter much if I went to level 7 without having completed the objectives on earlier levels since you have always been allowed to travel between levels anytime you wished.... However, not so this time. I realised I had to make my way back to level 6 and find the vital items I had missed before. But to my utter horror, I realise that the portcullises have closed behind me and blocked my way back! There seems to be no way to reopen the portcullises, the guards refuse to open them and I have no key that fits either. And here comes the really great part: In my naiveity I have overwritten all previous saves before I got myself trapped on level 7! Swell, just swell!
Now I wonder, is there some way to reopen those gates or bypass them or something, anything that will allow me to return to level 6? Or have I sealed my own fate through my immense stupidity? Really gratefull for an answer, thanks in advance. |
Tried EX YLEM (Open) spell already? You should have found EX and YLEM runes by this stage already.
|
Hm level 6 is the one with the mages and the puddles of lava on the walkways?
And level 7 has the mines, and the guard quarters which have portcullis, do you mean this one? The guards body should contain a key after you kill them all. Failing to find a key try the open spell like Scatty stated, or even a gate travel spell which teleports you to the moonstone on level 2 (vas rel por) |
That is, you probably won't have any mana on level 7 to cast spells. In that case you can simply attack the guards (IF you are in one room with them) or pull the switch / level in the same room which opens the gate (and the guards attack you also). Or search for an alternate route back to the stairs for level 6, there should be a way.
Of course, if you have a scroll in the backpack with Gate Travel or Open spell(s), there should be no problems. If nothing else helps, you can try to remove your weapon and bash the portcullis with bare hands to see if they open after a while. The guards will also turn hostile after that. Usually doesn't work on portcullis though, only on (most) doors. |
The crisis is over, there was a secret passageyway in the tombs that led back to the stairways, phew! However, now I have another small question. Does anyone know on which level you can find a flute? I,m uncertain if I have missed it on any of the previous levels and as fun as this game may be, I really don't feel like going through all the previous levels again.
|
It's been a while, but I think there's one somewhere on level 3, that with the lizardmen. Might be on level 4 also, or there instead.
|
Keyboard config
Is there a way to change the keyboard configuration for this game? As in turn left=Q, etc? Thanks again!

You could always use DOSBox' internal keymapper to remap which keyboard keys trigger are read as which keypresses in DOSBox.

Hi, there,
I checked Ultima games. Sadly i do not like perspective From Above to see my hero in some Ultima games. For example The Black Gate and Serpent Isle. U9 also. After finishing the nice Ultima Underworld 2 and U8 Pagan i will start The Stygian Abyss.:D ultima yoga |
I would like to make very, very polite remark concerning this game.
I carefully read all necessary documents in The Stygian abyss page. Reading document Manuals.zip, sub file Uw_keys.jpg I found non correct text, namely: Quotation: ..Press [F10] and use following keys: G unlimited power etc. End of quotation. Above text is non correct, because if You press F10 in the game, your hero will start Camp. No any unlimited power. I did many tests. Of course yoga and Capo will never use such cheats but for the new gamers this text is misleading. ultima yoga :smile2: |
As i stated above i started the game UW-TSA.
The first impression: Endless corridors and doors. UW2 is much better game with its scenario and tasks. For example I am unable to say where am I now! Some waters, bridges, frogs in level 3. ha ha ha :hihihi: my XP level is 6 but still unable to cast the very ordinary spell as Light. In Lor |
yoga is not Sergey Bubka
There is my location. Sry for bad lighting.
I did some attempts to jump still no result. I press the left mouse button to move fast, then up mouse cursor and then press right mouse button to jump. Rats!!! I am on small island and have to jump to next beach. There are some bad frogs who bite me if fail in the water. Shame! The brave who beat Lord Xeen, Lord Chaos and many more stopped before some wall. |
Quote:
I solved this problem with wall but .... Hmmm.. i do not like the game. It is very simple, without scenario and without tasks as in the next UW2 when the protagonist must visit many worlds and complete many tasks. There are endless corridors and doors only. Nothing more... So i will stop this project for a while or forever. |

Nah!! Are you crazy, dear Hunvagy or going crazy now??? Do YOU ever played these 2 games or just read the stupid reviews? i, the humble yoga played UW2 3 times and now play UW1. The brave opened more secret doors from You, my dear! Please take back your words otherwise i will visit Hungary, find You and ask for fair duel. My duel helper will be my friend Twillight. OK? :whistling: the brave yoga |

It's a lot more fulfilling that you actually have to look for the ankhs to level, that you have to find the mantras to use them, and that you have to talk to everyone and eventually find out what the whole story behind the Stygian Abyss and its fall is. Also there's a seed of life just behind the first secret door, you can plant that at any little nieche where plants grow. When you die, you get resurrected if you replanted it anywhere. |
Quote:
Still I agree with you, Ultima Underworld - Stygian Abyss is in quite some ways better than UW2. |
Still I agree with you, Ultima Underworld - Stygian Abyss is in quite some ways better than UW2.
:) But...but can i believe my eyes? What happened? Is it true? Till now i run and run and run and open and open the doors only!!! Where is the scenario, where are the "worlds aka caves", where are the murder and spy in the King castle? Nowhere... and YOU tell me - no, yoga, too bad, you give up before first closed door?!!? Like we see black stone but You speak - no, yoga, this is white stone.. Let ask more AB members about the Q: -What is the better game from both - UUSA or UW2? Maybe we speak about different games, mates? UUSA? ..and first bug is discover.. I enter a cave through the water, use my musical instrument but nothing falls in my hands. Nothing. I expected special goblet. |
UW is about the story, I'd say.
What is this place? Who built it? Why is it more of a ruin now? Who was this Cabirus and was he out of his mind? A troll carried a girl downstairs? What on earth...? Playing UW is like being inside a book, there's a story there waiting to tell itself to you. UW is not a TES game. You don't run around doing millions of tiny quests. The reason you are there in the first place, to learn about the place and to get out of there is the main quest. |
Quote:
OK. Thank You, Mighty Midget for your opinion. As i say before i respect every opinion even... hmmm.. i am at the other side of the barricade. We Bulgarians have a saying: The truth is born in dispute Maybe some one will support the brave opinion? Welcome :) |
Let's just say one more thing yet. What makes Stygian Abyss different, for me at least, is the aspect of survival. You are thrown into the dungeon with no weapons no armor nothing. Find everything from scratch, build up your character and equipment, stay alive.
In UW2 the start is easier, it is a quite different, even if similar, setting. You get already some equipment right in your room and nearby. Only the castle cellar levels and below have a bit of the survival aspect of UW1. Once you begin entering the world gem it is more exploration than survival, you aready have better equipment and weapons. Seeing it that way maybe it's wrong to say Ultima Underworld - The Stygian Abyss is better than Ultima Underworld 2. It's simply different, and also has it's own charm, while UW2 has it's own good points. |

Maybe after Morrowind project i will return to UU TSA again. maybe..so many and good games ahead... |
A forgotten gem in game history.
I still remember the batch file I made to put the entire game on a Virtual RAM Drive. I got it to run so smoothly on my old 386.
I also remember being scared to death running down corridors away from very scary looking monsters! As a 10-year old when I first played it, it made me panic. I didn't want to see the skull when I died! And monsters or people, you could correspond with anything or attack it, even if its friendly. If you have a business deal with a goblin go sour, and he is upset already, he will become hostile, the music will change, and suddenly you must defend your shady business practices. Or run. Anyway this game is extremely awesome, and I can not believe it gets overlooked as often as it does. The sequel is a little hard to get started, but the first one has a degree of social immersion in a 3d environment that no modern game has really come close to. |
Quote:
:hello: Welcome a board, dear Flyinghamster. No, this gem is not forgotten. 386? Wow! You passed the gem? Me-no. :3: but...never said never.. |

i don't get you, yoga. you've beaten games that make me squirm and yet you never found the patience to beat a game i've beaten w/o a single FAQ.
although to be fair, i took months to beat this game because i got stuck with a boring subquest and decided to relax by spending ~2 months reading LotRs(all 3 books) before getting back to it. for its sequel, labyrinth of worlds, i just read a walkthrough as soon as i got stuck with that listener imp thing... |

Polite help plea
Well, well,well.
bad news brave met first strong monster - hostile spider Mavrey night eyes. Nothing special, but it poisoned me and i have not antidote potion. My options are not much. 6 rune stones: In, Bet, Jux, Lor, Ort, Sanct. Possible magics: Light = In+Lor - not valuable in combat. Armor = Bet+In+Sanct - no much help Magic arrow = Ort+Jux I beat 4 times the spider from distance, no big effect. Any help and advice will be highly appreciated. Many gamers are passed this game, i know. Friend in need's a friend indeed :D |

Level 4
:OK: |
Who cares?
....
Yes. Who? Anyway warnings for new beginners: - Dropping important stuff on some areas is not wise idea, because some times they simply..disappeared. 10 meters from pit with the golem and golds are such area.Lvl 2. Hmm. i do not use lamps because of need of oil flasks. I am using now the Light magic. Location: I entered lvl 5, found the hilt, took blade and Master Shak at lvl 2 completed my new weapon The sword of Justice. Still i am unable to kill Sir Roderick - lvl 4 and Bandit Leader - lvl 3. The game is very user friendly. And i like to fly! Nice series! happy brave :smile2: PS: Why all nice RPG are created during 1992? Hard Q. |
I have the next important artifacts already:
1. Cup of Wonder 2. Sword of Justice 3. Taper of Sacrifice 4. Ring of Humility Have to kill strong Sir Roderick to find the 5-th one Standard of Honor. Location: Lvl 5. |
Quote:
Mighty brave entered lvl 6. Progress: - Roderick, the bastard, was killed. New artifact - Standard of Honor. Lvl 6: 2 artifacts were found: - Wine of Compassion - Book of Honesty Total: 7 artifacts. A small note: In my gaming one thread was enough to create special boots for lava. Some experts in Net said that 2 threads are required.!?No. :hihihi: If i am not wrong this gem is my 97-th game. I want to say that the game makes me happy. Compared with let say Skyrim TSA is 100 points ahead. Very soon i will attach my artifacts. |
I would like to make small remark:
- The artifacts are not artifacts but Talismans. - The Sword of Justice is not talisman but weapon. So, my total found talismans are 6. 2 more left. Lvl 7 I entered this level to find out that there is bad news for me: --- No magics allowed. Or simply i have no mana at all. This way my operations are very difficult because no light. I carelessly collected no torches, no lamps and oil flasks.. Now i am forced to retreat and rethink my future activity. Hmmm.. but brave never gives up. |
Blood, sweat and tears
No, this is no music group but my feelings.
Mates, very difficult level is lvl 7. Why? Because no mana allowed. Result: No magics at all. Result: No refreshment, no light, no help, nothing. Just my courage and sword. Details: In the beginning. Big logistic operation to bring the important stuff. 5 talismans ready. 3 left. One guard post eliminated. 2 more before me. But in one post are 5-6 guards. Without magics i am unable to smash them all. Well, the regular tactic is to run, restore and back again. How? Just swimming to lvl 6. No. 8 hostile deep lurkers waited for me in the river. And they are poisonous! I spend 2 days!! to eliminate 3 lurkers only. If i free the river to back to lvl 6 safely, my situation will better. |
I know u can do it!
|
Quote:
O, thank You, dear and kind twillight. Yes, after hard battles with lurkers i reduced their numbers to 3. They are located at places which i am able to avoid or cross with big speed. But i can not forget Yr words that with simple rock in yr hand You will beat one game! Respect! == This RPG is real gem. Tale. Last news. I am visiting a good friend of mine in Sofia city - our capital now. ..Level 7. My problem and problem of every TSA gamer is no magics allowed, which is very bad for gamers. But i found solution: There is an Orb, which use my mana. I killed that Orb with Orb rock and Hurray.. my mana bottle is again activated. Now bad magician named Tybalt is my enemy who has to be eliminated. Test battles to understand his weak points. How are You? :OK: |
Last news from battleground
:smile2:
Oh, the news are nice! humble brave: Lvl 6-Golem was defeated and Shield of Valor is mine (yellow color) Lvl 7 - The strong ghost was killed and the black sword is mine. Bad Tuball was killed, Aria is free and i have 2 more important keys. I entered level 8 at new location. Hmmm. lvl 8 is last level maybe?! PS: I was glad that Uw1&2 was very easy installed on Toshiba Satellite laptop with W 7 Pro. This is mine friend machine i used to play. :) |
Easy to write down hard to ..
All required for plot 8 talismans are collected, namely:
1. Key of Love 2. Key of Courage 3. Key of Truth 4. Cup 5. Wine 6. Book 7. Taper 8. Standard Hurray! |
brave ready to win

The next 3 keys are transformed then in Triple key. 1. Key of Love 2. Key of Courage 3. Key of Truth Shield, Sword and Ring are Talismans also. :whistling: Wish me luck, amigos! Hi guys
I am trying to find a lost walkthrough Ultima Underworld. It was a nice UW walkthrough, very detailed, step-by-step. I only copied level 1 & the map into MS Word a long time ago. Now I can't find it on google anymore. I searched and searched and can't find it. Here is the part I have. If anyone knows about this walkthrough, please share!
Quote:
http://i.imgur.com/FeqH8v4.gif
Yes, it's weird. I did google searches on certain sentences from this walkthrough, and I even did an IMAGE SEARCH, and google couldn't find any reference. I liked this walkthrough because it was the most detailed-step-by-step walkthrough. I'll try the other walkthroughs - even though they are not as detailed. |
@andwan0
Weird. I can't find a single reference to that walkthrough on google. Nothing. There are plenty of walkthroughs out there though so unless you want that particular one, there is absolutely hope. Sir Cabirus' page has plenty of Ultima walkthroughs and tidbits of info. |

If you use the walkthrough of Sir Cabirus, then keep in mind the map has clickable zones, even where there are no numbers. These zones will provide additional hints. Also, when you read the map notation and it says I36 or some other number, all those Ixx are items and there is a link further down the page to an index of all Ixx's on the map.
All in all, I found that walkthrough to be very good. You have the must-do as well as the can-do listed. |

Now I really want a plastic giant gem :3

When I purchased Ultima 8 back then, the box contained a full printed cloth map and a tin pentagram coin. Too bad I lost it all with time, but the game packages back then really used to be filled with love, all the content + manual, and sometimes even the hint books, can't even hope to see that in modern games with the scarce PDF manuals on CD if you're lucky, or nothing at all as usually.

I own the game Ultima Underworld I, but I am not sure if the extras such as the maps are the ones you are looking for. I made a screenshot of the game with all the extras for you to check them out. Recalling that many old sites such as Geocities and other ancient domains are doomed to extinction I presume. I remember there was a site with the maps of Lands of Lore I, but I am afraid it is gone forever as well. Another site with the Master of Magic Champions and Heroes data also disappeared. But Wikia supplied, but without the same information as the site. |

I understand what you mean, because I thought of you as collector. I would have agreed with you in the past, but I have changed my concepts. The advantages of owning digital games would be: • Optimization of physical space; • Storing in the cloud of your collection; • Digital documents are easier because they allow search; • Old-fashioned protection has disappeared; • Discs and manuals do not deteriorate over time; • There are extras such as Wallpapers, OST, Artbooks, Artworks, etc. This is only my opinion and without the intention of offending you or anyone else. |
I understand what you mean and respect your view on storing the game digitally. Personally I'm not a fan of cloud storages as you can't access those if you have no internet, data privacy is a huge leak nowadays as well, and besides there's always the chance for the servers to go down for one or the other reason, which is usually part of the disclaimer on those sites as well, and you're left without the game.
There's a middle ground though which I personally prefer to use - with games which I like and have I create a Winrar archive with the sub-folders in game folder, with all the possible box prints, walthroughs and other extras, compress it to maximum and add a recovery record in case the archive ever gets damaged for some reason. Those backups for easy access are stored on a big storage-size USB-connected hard drive, which itself has a backup mirror on another such hard drive. Benefit - I can take those portable hard drives with me if I'm travelling around, 100% no necessity of, or dependance on internet, and great safety of all games I owe. But that's just me going the safe way anyway, and I can understand if using digital cloud storage is more comfortable for others. |

I agree with you because I suffered when the site GameDownloads.com shut down and I demanded reimbursement from Gamesplanet.com. I won £ 10.00 as compensation. I also use the middle way, but digitally. I download games from GOG.com, Gamersgate.com and Gamesplanet.com only from games that do not need an account on Steam, Origin and Ubisoft. Usually old games, indie games or lesser known developer. |
