I found my favorite game of all time (for back in the day) and yet don't know how to install it. I unzip the folder and put it in my C drive and when I open it there's icons like install, setup, S2,s2edit, and I click S2 and it comes back saying that it can't read com2 or something. Basically it's not working and I'm about to :sniper: My computer.

If you are running Windows XP, then try DOSBox or VDMSound.

this has been explained so often before...

CLICK THE IGNORE BUTTON!

there, I hope it helps :)

edit: maybe I should write a trouble shooting guide for this game, since people keep asking the same questions over and over...

Rogue 17-08-2005 01:48 PM

Ignore button will not help you with the sound on XP.

Bernie 17-08-2005 01:49 PM

dude, sound works great on xp.

Run the setup.exe to configure the sound :D

It all works!

Eagle of Fire 17-08-2005 07:57 PM

I always used VDMSound to play Settlers 2 on my Win XP machine and this without problem.

Bernie 18-08-2005 10:37 AM

I always just run the setup.exe on XP comps.. I have never ever had any problems with this either :)

As far as I know, you can't have DOS game sound fx and music under winxp. Most of the times it will not recognize the cards. But if you have it run that way, then lucky your! :)

Bernie 18-08-2005 11:36 AM

In this case you can, and I have installed and setup this game on many XP comps. I have never had any problem with the sound. Actually, in my opinion Settlers II runs better on winxp, then on any old operating system, even DOS.

oh yeah, a small note Dos game sound effects are very possible on WinXP, if the game can handle it. Since Settlers II was made to run on older windows versions, it can figure this out.

Must be some sort of fix in this archive, as I remember installing it on my XP some time ago from CD (gold edition) and I could not get trough sound setup without VDMSound.

Get back on topic please. This thread is not about how to make Settlers II Gold to work sound with Win XP. That issue is extremely old and already been solved often already (by using DOSBox or VDMSound).

All machines are different. Let's try to make the starter of this thread able to play the game on his machine.

We might help him, if he answers questions asked just after the first post. ;)

Bernie 18-08-2005 07:14 PM

Well... he said that he got the usual COM2 problem.. I told him to click ignore.. so?

Eagle of Fire 18-08-2005 07:41 PM

Second and last warning before I close this thread.

I am also having this error message, I also tried the ignore button. I then get a black screen that just sits there till I shut down the program. Although I can run arena just fine in dosbox this program will not run. I get that same black screen. Now this wasn't mentioned before but are others having the com2 error message also using an optical mouse? Does that have anything to do with this problem? Odd that the install/setup menu for sound will use my mouse. Just not the game.

Please do not resurect old threads from the death. Create yourself a new and personal thread about your problem.

Registering would not be bad either. ;)
