I had forgotten all about this game! I've spent whole days with this game when I was a kid. Thank you! :)

Hunden 18-08-2005 12:05 PM

Awesome game, nice post!

Triton 18-08-2005 08:32 PM

Meh... I thought 688(i) Hunter/Killer Los Angeles-class was a better submarine simulator. You could fire missiles, lay mines, drop off Rangers and SEALs, and you didn't have to play as a kraut.

Blood-Pigggy 18-08-2005 08:36 PM

Well, I think this was based on the movie of the same name, so whaddya expect?
They were on a kraut in the film, so are they in the game.

Doubler 18-08-2005 08:42 PM

The nice thing about this game is that you don't need to be a submarine buff to play it. You can pretty much jump in and be more or less succesfull and have some fun.
It is not as realistic or advanced as other simulators, but just as much fun :)

Well this game is placed at a different point in time. They hadn't missles then to start with - and German forces didn't have any SEALs.
It's nice to see a game from a different point of view, but it would be good if you could pick a side you'd wanna play.

Triton 19-08-2005 01:14 AM

Well, I'm not going to play a game where I control an avatar who is fighting for an unjust cause and is targeting Allied military personnel and property, as well as innocent civilians. I'd rather see a Wahoo-class submarine sim.

Amayirot Akago 19-08-2005 06:43 AM

*shakes the boat around*
"Sorry people; I didn't really have to do that. I'm just a big fan of that movie, Das Boot; or as we call it in English: The Boot."

Sorry, couldn't resist posting this here ;)

cheesegrater 19-08-2005 06:44 AM

Das Boot was a *dirty word* kick behind movie!

Doubler 19-08-2005 09:06 AM

Errr, Triton. Targeting innocent civilians is a choice you make ingame
Unless you count destroying those anchored supply ships, the game never asks you to destroy civilian shipping.

As for fighting for an unjust cause. Well, I guess you'd never play the NOD in C&C, or the Soviets in RA... Suit yourself, if you want to miss out on the gaming experience.

Triton 19-08-2005 06:39 PM

The difference here is that it's a recreation of an actual war.

JackBlack 19-08-2005 07:32 PM

Anyone have this problem??? I'm running ZoneAlarm Pro and AVG virus scanner. Everytime I run this game, they'll get errors, shut down, and I get an error saying that I have missing root certificates. After doing a little digging around, I found that the game somehow changes the date on my computer. The last time I checked it set it to 8/27/2097. Change the time and everything works fine. Just wanted to throw that out there in case someone else has the same problem.

gregor 20-08-2005 12:11 PM

Game crashes when i press number 6

Also some manual would be good. How do i use the rudder, how do i change strenght of engines, how do you do emergency surface...

TheChosen 20-08-2005 12:29 PM

Good god! This is the best submarine game i have ever played!
Youre the best guys! :OK:

gregor 20-08-2005 04:35 PM

ok i fugured out the keys. i still dont' know how you destroy an objective on land (e.g. ammo warehouse in fjord). used torpedoes, cannon... no effect

Doubler 21-08-2005 10:52 AM

The cannon should work. Just hit the building a few times, and soon you'll see smoke coming out of it.

Those bunkers on the bridge can even be destroyed by the AA gun, but it'll take a while and a lot of ammo :D

walruss 31-10-2005 09:34 PM

nice game but the keyboard shortcuts for speed don't work, I can't get the boat moving! LOL. By the way, does anyone know where i can get 688?

Bp103 07-12-2005 08:33 AM

eeerrrrmm....Wierd grapics is it VECTOR or EGA or VGA?

Guest 14-02-2006 06:29 PM

I think this is not Das Boot, I think this is called wolfpack.

Master MC 14-02-2006 06:46 PM

Well the game says Das Boot.
I'd prefer a whole community and the game itself saying that it's called Das Boot over a guest who says it's called Wolfpack.

kretschmer 08-04-2006 01:47 PM

Has anyone succesfully finished the "north atlantik patrol" mission?

Guest 16-04-2006 04:41 PM

Yes, I did it by luck some years ago but I can't remember how.
Would be glad if some people who know the walkthroughs could post them.
I start with the Gibraltar-Mission:
Just shoot the planes and avoid getting hit...
Was the most easy mission for me...

kretschmer 17-04-2006 01:36 PM

Fjord: Just do what the radio says :-) After executing the order, leave the fjord and meet the other U-Boat again. Use the RDF (Alt-R) to locate it. Do not report the mission status to Kriegsmarine before meeting the boat.

Arctic: Use Alt-R to find the 3 ships and torpedo them. The ships are easy to locate, as they are the only targets. Use binocs (or periscope) and Alt-F to navigate through the ice.

Bay of Biscay: Use Alt-R multiple times to locate a target that does not move. If there is none, go to east about 1/2 quadrant and repeat the search. When found, go to the target, identify it (Alt-I), dive, draw nearer and fire a torpedo from long distance. You can try multiple times. U-570 won't be alarmed by your torpedoes. If you come too close, U-570 will submerge and you will most likely have lost. The enemy will fire an endless amount of torpedoes on you (which won't hit as long as you stay submerged). I don't know if U-570 would surface again eventually. At least in 'realistic' mode, there is no way to destroy a submerged target. You can not even locate it using the hydrophone (Alt-H).

Can you calm down? It's a game. Thanks.

Anyone tried Silent Hunter III? That's a great sub game.

Guest 16-06-2006 01:08 PM

I love this site, there is so much information to be found. Thank you.

kretschmer 05-09-2006 09:39 PM

Hmm i tried again the north atlantic mission several times.. and failed :-( It seems that the program becomes instable as soon as i met with a milch-cow resupply boat. Shortly after the rendezvous i get rammed by a phantom ship everytime.

The Fifth Horseman 06-09-2006 12:16 PM

Are you running it in DosBox?

[/b]
Yes I am. From 0.65 on both video and keyboard work fine.

The Fifth Horseman 08-09-2006 09:11 AM

Did you try a different copy of the game?

kretschmer 09-09-2006 10:47 AM

Yes I did. The version from abandonia is still worse than my copy I had from <don't know, too long ago...>. It crashes far before I could torpedo the first convoy. Other games run fine on my dosbox.. maybe I should look for other copies of the game.

kretschmer 11-09-2006 10:01 PM

So i tried again.. now the abandonia copy worked as well as my previous one. Don't know why; my old copy of the program also crashes sometimes. So there is no difference, just now i got rammed by a phantom ship with the abandonia copy :-(

Haha yeah, Silent Hunter III is very great, but I'm sure Triton will hate that, because you are playing ALWAYS the germans :D :D. But triton, just stay with your brave allies....it seems, that you have no appreciation of history, but you would fight against german civilians without mercy, I suppose...but that's no problem, because they are ALL EVIL!!!!111 :wall: :wall: :bleh: .....ignorant :whistling:

ganimedo 11-02-2007 07:10 PM

Nice: Since DOSBox has reached 0.65, the graphics work in 256-color VGA mode!

how does this work in vista?

_r.u.s.s. 25-05-2007 09:09 AM

use dosbox, download it from the site.

Guest_Chimo 13-02-2010 10:37 PM

Hello! I have the original game since 1990 and I never finished North Atlantic Patrol mission :-/ If someone know how to... please post!!!

Trick to avoid crash in milch cow rendezvous: unlimited torpedoes. Fire all torpedoes of a single type, and then charge another type. Reload back the wasted type of torpedoes several times, and each reload you will have a new one.

Sorry for my poor english
