Hi!

I guess you all know the great racing game STUNTS. So I suggest we make a little competition. I just made a track (this one will open the season). I finished it, but my time wasn't anything special (and I used the best car around). I expect you to beat my time, but who'll be the fastest?

You all have until Sunday, September 4th to compete on this course and send me your best times. I'll anounce the winner on Monday, September 5th, First prize will be - your own track.

So the next racing track will be made by the person who will have the best time on this one (and so on).

Here's a very weird landing...

As the beginning of this particular try went bunkers (you can see me hitting the side of the tunnel) I decided to take one of my favorite pastimes, looping (really, it is :P), to a new level.
The ending is entirely in line :)

For some reason your replay is only a second long for me :blink:
I tried redownloading it, but to no effect.

"Leapfrog" lasts only 1 second, and "Looping" just shows the car hitting the side of the tunnel and burning for 30 seconds. :huh:

There must be something with different versions of the game?

I can't see any of your replays - it's like they'd be empty.

Maybe the replays shouldn't be attached tot he boards?

I've got version 1.1, Abandonia's got version 1.0.
What versions do you have?
It can't be the boards, as theVoid's works perfectly for me.

Mine's v1.1 (February 12, 1991).

EDIT: I just downloaded all the replays again - and only mine worked for me... I guess different game versions only play their own replays...

Take a look at this page. The first full download is the 1.0 of Abandonia, the second is Sebatianos' 1.1 version, the third is my 1.1 version (allthough the download adds a lot of junk) that I've played for over thirteen years now.

Well I just deleted mine version - and put on the one from Abandonia (everything works fine). I guess there was just something wrong with my replay (it's the only one that doesn't quite work).

I'm actually using the one I downloaded from Abandonia.

BTW - There's just a bit over 12 hours left until the end of first tournament week - Thus far the best resoults I've looked at are around 1:58 - you still have time to submit your best time!

I saw your replay and I don't understand! It shows you crash in the first tunes (some 10 seconds after the start) and then the car just keeps burning until it reaches the time - 1:38:65! :eeeeeh: This makes no sense.

The replay lasts 1 second only. <_< The same problem experienced before.

However, here's my ultimate chart. I think I'd hardly make something better.

Sebatianos, you need to use my version to view it correctly. It's linked somewhere earlier in this thread.
Funny thing is, SupSuper's replay seems to error no matter what version I play it in, allthough the later 1.1 (not my 1.1 from december 1990, but that one from february 1991) does show something.

Hm... I think that TAKEOFF was rewind... If you put the replay to the begining before saving it - it may cause that problem (at least it did with my previous version).

And it also messes up my game. Now I start on the grass 90 degrees off the starting post :blink:

My version is the 1.1 Feb 1991.
Your replay gives me a broken track: the whole track is moved some squares to the left so that the banked road is broken.

We need to standardize versions for the next track.
I propose my version (wouldn't I :P ), as (for me) it's the only one that gives me sound in XP (and it runs perfectly too), and I can't run any of the versions in DosBox anyway.

Well, they all run, but without sound and very, very sluggish :tai:

They all run perfectly in XP, except that my own version is the only one that gives sound. And sound is important in the game.

My version works fine on DOSBox and on XP without sound (though I can fix that with VDMS).

Uhm, Doubler, I just saw your replay....Are we allowed to race like that? I mean, avoiding some stunts? I tried to complete it using them all. <_<

As long as you finish it I think it's perfectly okay, I did it too. I jumped over the first corkscrew.

In my opionion it's part of the game, figuring out how to drive the fastest route.
These opportunities are not always present, and when they are, they're not always faster.

Well the game punishes you if you take shortcuts, but it doesn't mind if you skip something... So I guess the game is in itself a referee. The final score should count - no matter what you skip :sneaky:

@Doubler - now that I downloaded your version - I get the same error I got before when I wanted to watch Super's replay... :wall:

I tried Doubler's replay on the Abandonia version (1.0 Oct 1990) and I get the same problem Sebatianos first did, he crashes on the beginnning and stays there for the rest of the time. I tried my replay and it only lasts 1 second.
I also tried playing the track on it and it's impossible, the car crashes right on the first jump.

Stunts 1.0 is the Abandonia version and I suspect Sebastianos' version.

Stunts 1.1 is my version.

4D Sports 1.1 is Doubler's version (replay works fine on it).

Now I'm off to beat Doubler's time now that I know his trick :sneaky:

I just realised something!

Different versions let you do (not let you do) different things!
Example - 4DStunts11 - let you skip the loop (I couldn't do that effectivly with my version).
V1.0. - let's you jump throught the roof of the tunel - 4D doesn't...

So for the next track we deffinetly need the unified version!!!
I guess 4D is the newest and runs normaly in WinXP as well, so we may use that one - or the Abandonia version (that's why we have it).

Anyway, my vote goes to 4D, mainly because I won't be able to participate effectively on any other version. I use sound to detect how far I can go in turning, and I don't have that on V1.0.
EDIT: Besides, 1.0 physics are weird :P

Mine too.

I managed (after 10 hours) to finish the track in 2:48 minutes. If you want to see how bad I can play :P download this replay.

The difference between versions is minimal.
You can jump through the roof of the tunnel in 1.1 (hadn't bothered to find out before :P)
You can skip the loop in 1.0 (just did it).

It seems the car is a bit more sturdy in 1.0, and that it doesn't spin out of control as quickly.

As playing 1.1 doesn't seem to offer an unfair advantage to me, would I perhaps be allowed to use 1.1, please (big begging eyes).

IMHO very easy, long curves and long straight tracks. But fun nontheless :)

I just switched to V1.0, like the rest of you.
It took some getting used to, but now I've actually managed to set a better time then with 1.1 :sneaky:

Your replays are acting up for me in 1.0, but are fine in 1.1.

Well because of you I switched to the v1.1 - but I'll probably just keep on playing the original version (this does seem to have some bugs). Did you see the replay for blast? I should have crashed at the loop, but it just went trough! Also in some other one the car keeps on burning in mid air - after it's been throuwn up on the tunel and didn't fall back to the ground...

I knew about that bug where you go straight through the loop. It's impossible to reproduce, though. You need to hit the loop at the correct angle, with the correct speed to do it.

You all know the bug involving the burning opponent, don't you? If not, I absolutely have to post it here.
And the bug involving the series of ramps?
And the bug involving the border of the map?
I should have ancient replays on them.

I tried using v1.0 and it just made my times worse.

Also, the only bug about the border of the map that I know of is that it doesn't make your car stop, it keeps on accelerating and accelerating until it takes off.

So which version are we going to use now? :blink:

We probably wouldn't even think of the fact that there were different versions, if the replays wouldn't work normaly (that doesn't effect the times thought).

Yes, we need to agree on whether shortcuts are allowed or not.

For instance, you can easily save a lot of seconds by simply jumping through a loop instead of driving through it.

Anyways...
I decided to dig up Stunts and see if I still got the moves. Great track, Doubler! Really tested my reflexes! :ok:

My first testrun gave me a time of 2.16 I think, and the race is captured on tape below.


As you can see, there were lots of close calls. Need to reawaken my skills more :bleh:

Well Docu, you've still got some seconds to get rid off, I'm affraid :whistle:
Oh, and I designed this track so it would be next to impossible to skip stunts. If anyone can skip the loop (like I did on the previous thrack) without any reference lines and only a few one-hundred's of seconds to do it, and redo that to get the best of times, I believe he really deserves those two seconds he gains. :blink:
And to be added to every Stunts Hall of Fame emmediatly.

By the way, I believe shortcuts should be allowed. As I said before, finding shortcuts is part of the process of learning a track.
Besides. Things might really get stiff otherwise. Debates of what is to be considered 'skipping' and a lot of totally identical and unoriginal tries. The shortcuts keep the game interesting, and people original, trying different things all the time.

I made that loop shortcut with the Jaguar and now my fastet time is with that car - and I can't seem to beat it (at least not without the loop shortcut and I always crash now)...

By the way, Sebatianos. Is that shortcut you're refering to the bug where you manage to go straight through the wrong side of the loop (as in your replay)? As I've resently discovered how to reproduce it at will, and haven't used it yet, as this one is a pretty extreme exploit.

Here's my replay if you want (Stunts 1.1 required). And, like Doubler said, by driving very very fast, since I didn't skip anything (not that I'm against taking shortcuts, I just find it pretty impossible on this track).

Nope - it was that jump through the loop you preformed on the last track. I guess I got lucky that one time, because I wasn't even trying to do it. Unfortunately I didn't save the replay.
Why isn't the Jag any faster - I do prefer it's handling the curves to the Porche March everybody eslse is using.

That's incredibly difficult on this track. I only got it right once (and crashed my car later on).
When the competition is over, I'll post a replay of how to go through the wrong side of the loop (which is a no-brainer to do), and it can be desided whether it should be allowed.

The March is the fastest car by far, and it's handling is more then adequate to handle all kinds of tracks - I'm sorry, but I don't think you can make due in the Jaguar.
You should talk to the people who made the game about why they made it so, though :P

I am too rusty in the game. Haven't played it for years.

The fastest I have sofar is 2.04

But, it's extremelly difficult to play as I don't get any sound (in WinXP) and DOSBox can't really handle it too well (it's choppy). So I don't get to hear the whining of the wheels when you do a turn too hard. So I can't really give the car all it got, as I am driving deaf :(

Which version are you playing?
If you haven't already, you should try the Mindscape V1.1; it works perfectly and with sound in XP for me, while with all other versions I get exactly the same as you described.

I have tried both version 1.0 and version 1.1

All versions work fine with me on DOSBox.

And so far my best is 1:56.95

Nope, never participated in a tournament, the only ones I find have already ended. And still can't beat my last time without crashing on a curved bridge.

The only thing I don't like about that track of mine is that it's pretty big so it can get boring, though I have shorter ones.

At first I had trouble of getting it to run probably for some reason. That's why I didn't join even though I said I will. But now that I got it working, I just suck at it. So I probably won't be joining at all. Maybe after a lot of practice.

Well unless anybody objects... I started this competition (although I'm obviously not among the fastest drivers...).
I thought this could go on as long as people are interested - new track every Tuesday - with time until end of Sunday to race that track... simply idea, that some obviously like - hopefully we'll keep racing a few more weeks :ok:

As I said - if the game allows it, you can do it and it counts. The game penalizes you for cutting shortcuts by skiping a part of the track - so there are some rules set in the game. IF you can find shortcuts that the game dosen't punish you for... the time is on that final score-board and that's the one that counts!

Take the turn. No doubt about that. Not for me, at least.

When I go for the best time, about 95% of the time I end up in a fireball (seriously), and another 3% of my tries I restart.
On this track, I've only finished once so far.

I took the Lamborgini - for fun - and just as I reached the second loop (the left to right loop) I crashed, but I got the winning resoult! When I wanted to go to the replay (I really wanted to save it and see how I could have won) the game crashed!
When I restarted it, the resoult was still there :eeeeeh: :eeeeeh: :eeeeeh:

I'm not submiting this time (2:14:70) as a valid time for the competition. I CRASHED during the loop. I didn't even finish!
The best time I got was 3:13:70 and that's my official time (that would currently put me in the second place).
I posted this because I have no idea how something like this could happen. I mean - even if I would finish with the Lamborgini I'm sure it would take me way over 7 minutes - the car simply hasn't the speed to be competitive!

Somewhere in the mists of time during a transfer from one data storage device to another, my version of Stunts lost the tropical backdrop file, and I've never retrieved it (it gives character to my game :) ).
Guess I'll just have to edit the background on this track.

I was calmly driving around the track, and after a jump my car just takes off, straight up, and then comes back straight down, just like that.

Here's the replay, it's Stunts 1.1, but it's worth it. Just watch from 1:10.00, and it's just downright weird :blink:

That's a pretty well known bug, involving high speed, jumps and edges, but fun nonetheless :ok:
You can never take a series of ramps at too (Mark 'too') high a speed, something will always go wrong :P

1:13:15 :sneaky: if somebody hasnt noticed and want to get more faster score so I recommend to skip all the corkscrew's :ok:

Well I still couldn't get a time lower then 2:32 (but haven't really tried that hard...). Still got today and the weekend to go!

I'm currently at 1:54.20, and I really can't see how to shave off another 40 seconds without skipping the second part of the track at least!
Did you find a way to get through that narrow without getting a penalty for it, or something?

Anyway, thanks, but it's certainly not the fastest time possible. I had about every obscure bug working against me, and I made a fair share of mistakes. I'll try to improve it, but I suspect it'll be time for me to take a little brake from the game after this track LOL (the trembling hands may be an indication :P ).

There are a lot more things skippable then just corkscrews, but two of them aren't all that easy :ok:

Now here's a little something for you. This is not a highspeed track (though it has a few places where you can get to the "6th gear"), it's short, and is quite easy. But it has a lot of things that takes practice to do perfect, so I find this a quite good track to compete in.

Oh... and one little thing: A part of the track is built on water :whistle: (and the green stuff you see on the large curves in the water is NOT grass... call it swamp or whatever, you WILL sink if you take a shurtcut!)
If you've got the skills, you can really cut off some seconds on this watersection.

I'm sorry to say that I don't believe you. You beat me by almost 10 seconds... so as you've set this marvelous time three times already, I'd love to see a replay. If you've found some crazy tricks to beat the track (legally), you don't have to post the replay before this track's contest is over... but I'd sure like to see the replay! :)

Sure Hermann :ok: There are no rules! so u can skip loops, find the fastest way or do any crazy stuff to get to the end. Right Sebatianos?

Sure thing. You can do anything - except to change the track! As long as you can improve the time on the track given (and the computer doesn't penalise you - like if you just take a small circle and go strait to the finish) it counts.

driving with manual u get more faster times if u havent still used it. excample just before jump put the gear on fifth (before going up the hill)and your car takes off like a rocket! :smoke: and going trough loop your angle has to be correct, then shift the gear on fourth almost the same time as u r going to crash and youll just go trough it (the speed has to be correct). Doesn't always work then.. manual driving is easy :ok:

Though I did take the loop and did brake before the last jump in order to get into the tunnel.

Well, the times shouldn't be too difficoult (but there are two roads you can take).

Once you have a time you're happy with, post it (and possibly a screenshot of the time). You have time until midnight (this Sunday).

and when i get to the end of the track again there are two chices which one to choose? i choose the left one.

Well if you go right (at the begining - after going up hill) you'll be on the shorter road. At the end you have no choice anymore. That's where the two road come back together. If you go right you'll just got he wrong way :whistle:

Now usually we don't give so many tips out (it's not so hard to figure out anyway), but we have some new entries. The rules are simple - you have until midnight on Sunday (GTM+1) to submit the times for. The winner gets to post a track for the next week. The score will start from the begining (it's the begining of the next season - it's been a long pause anyway).

You can drive any car and do anything you like (except change the track with the track editor). Have fun and drive safely (at least in reality). :ok:

Really, on other tracks there's loads of tricks attached, but there are few of them here. Or at least few you can manage in a weeks' time ;)

And going right really is shorter, not to mention faster. Believe us :)

My trick on icy curves is to just skip them and go through the grass. It's slower but not as slippery so it compensates :P
In fact, I skip a lot of stuff. You just gotta be wary of just how much the game allows you to skip.

How about taking the screens with DosBox? :)

Run the game in DosBox and press CTRL-F5 to have DosBox create a screenshot which is then placed in the 'capture' folder in your DosBox directory.

My copy of Stunts doenst work with DosBox...

That's frustrating.

You can have imageshack (http://www.imageshack.us/) host screenshots and then use the IMG button to put them up your post.
A file, if it's small enough, can be attached to your post by using the 'File Attachments' line down at the bottom of the 'new post' screen. just above the 'add reply' button. Make sure the box is fully filled in when you press 'add reply', though, as previewing empties it :)

Relax, it's just a competition. Even if it's not the best possible, it's still better than all of us :P

But I get annoyed when I have to settle for something that isn't quite that perfect.

Anyway, it isn't that hard to get a good time on this track. No matter how it looks, you only need a few strategic brakes to get past the corners, and you skip most of those corners too. The concrete blocks, for example, should simply be ignored as unimportant. :)

You need to play it from inside the game :P
The game itself has a (the) replay function. To load a replay just go to the options screen, press the load replay button and select the replay. Make sure the replay's in the game folder, though. ;)

Strange, you should be able to view it correctly with the right version.
Make sure you view it with the 4D Sports Driving version 1.1 (Dec. 13 1990) distributed by Mindscape. View it with any other version and you'll get weirdness (like that crash).

2:22 (not worth a screenshot) after 6-7 attempts. But then again it's been 10 years since I last played Stunts :D

Edit: and that includes missing a corner... At the moment it seems that I either have to miss a corner or plow into some wall :whistle:

Unfortunately not, my versions of Stunts don't seem to work with Dosbox (they keep asking me for Disk B), so no chance of a screenshot there. Also, the link posted there to a different Stunts version didn't work for me (I could download all other versions on that site, except this single one that would work for the replays posted there).
However I've added a replay of my second-best time so far: 2'11.60 Watch it if you want to see some really crappy driving at corners :whistle:
My best is 2:08.90, I don't know if it would make sense to attach the highscores, after all several of you guys have managed much better times.

By the way, that 1'56 by Doubler is most impressive!

Sorry about the delay, I couldn't get the track to work. I spent hours going through the whole thing, remaking it, etc, and it still wouldn't work. Then I finally found out jumps need "breathing room" or the game doesn't accept them. :angry: Geez, they could at least show a message.

Anyways, you have until midnight of Sunday 15 January to submit your scores. Enjoy :)

This track is indeed confusing. Though it's a lot shorter than I would expect, especially taking into account that the average speed is quite low. Most of you should be able to complete it in (much?) less than 2 minutes.

did a really slow first drive got just under 3:00

For a first drive I'd call that a success...
I got lost, missed some corner and couldn't find the right track back quickly enough.
So after a couple of more trials, you should be able to get under 2'00.

Well I'm really drunk after a long time and the curves of this course didn't help any... I almost :sick: , but still I managed a time of 2:58 in the first try... Seems like a fun course.

I just discovered this website and this thread. I do a compilation of all possible Stunts competitions with tracks and winning replays, and I can't download almost all attached files of previous tracks.
I could download only some of the tracks and not any replay...
Does anyone have them all somewhere to send them to me in one zip file through rapidshare.de or any other file exchange website like it ?
I'll also try the few tracks I manage to download (contest2, contest4, crazy and winter) and publish my own records on them, just to see my level compared to yours.
