Heh, funny little game.

Guest 01-09-2005 04:00 AM

One of my favorite C64 games of all time. I always wondered if there was a true end to it. It just keeps going and going and going. In some places I can imagine secret areas opening up but I've never been able to accomplish that.

JudgeDeadd 01-09-2005 05:31 AM

Lamps, dude. The mysterious shining objects are lamps.

Flop 01-09-2005 09:47 AM

I loved this game on C64, but could never remember the name. But as soon as I saw the screenshots, I knew this was it. Thanks a lot Sebastianos, I can't wait to play it again. :)

Are you sure? Because after you get to the uper world (the castle) they don't look like lamps any-more... So I just wasn't sure. Thanks for the explenation though :ok:

i played this on the speccy, many moons ago.

The geayser type thing are meant to be flash pans (or at least that what the old insert said)

Also in the speccy version there was a flashing Ying Yang symbol that gave you extra lives.

I'm looking forward to playing it again.

Kon-Tiki 01-09-2005 12:30 PM

For the record, the remake's on Abandonia Reloaded

Bernie 01-09-2005 12:31 PM

This is such a brilliant game. I loved playing 2 player in it, trying to see who got the furthest, and the other being that green sumo wrestler trying to stop him

Bruce Lee rocks!

gorkur 01-09-2005 03:08 PM

I've played this to death on my C64. Got it in '86 and still play it today on my C64 :D

bahman 01-09-2005 03:10 PM

I remeber this game very well. I used to played it on spectrume. You can not blieve that how strong those little pixles make you busy. The game was greate for its time and still is good. I will give it a try too.

Marc 03-09-2005 11:53 PM

Had this one on the ol` Atari 800xl, was always one of me favs..took ages to load though :wall:

bruno 04-09-2005 12:07 AM

a very good game in past. :ok:

Zakhal 05-09-2005 05:52 AM

This was the first computer game I ever played. It was one of the few games on my friends computer (not sure what though possibly atari st).

Vitas 10-09-2005 12:44 PM

Heh I remember playing it in multiplayer with my friend where we could just stand for minutes doing that "boo" sound the sumo fighter produces;) A great game indeed;)

gorkur 10-09-2005 05:15 PM

Guys, I notice the review is wrong. It says the game is a side scroller but it isn't.

Thing is, I'm translating the review to Icelandic and I know I shouldn't change anything in the review but when I see something that I know is wrong I feel awfully tempted ;)

But I'll translate it directly for now, although I'm hoping for a correction.

Sebatianos 11-09-2005 07:39 PM

Thanks for mentioning it - I'll correct it in a few minutes. You're right - the game isn't a side scroller, you're going from one room to another. I wanted to write it's a platformer - don't know why I mixed the two... Thanks again :ok:

gorkur 12-09-2005 01:28 PM

No problem :)

TheChosen 13-09-2005 12:14 PM

Aaah...Bruce Lee.

Since im not using dosbox, im going to play my commodore version (On real commodore) today.

Sebatianos 13-09-2005 12:24 PM

Now that's a treat (my C64 is currently resting on the top of the closet - been rearanging furniture - but it will be hooked back on the TV as soon as I figure a place for it).

Well, the C64 version is so much better anyway :ok:

Xamuel 15-09-2005 07:59 PM

Man this brings back memories
I think this was my first action game (at least on the C64) in my whole life!!
I can remember how i tried to imitate Bruce Lee's kicks LOL

Kearnsy 17-09-2005 09:48 AM

This is a cool little game.
Once you get used to it, its a great way to kill a few hours.
I didn't play it before so I guess Im missing out on the nostalgia...Still I like it! :ok:

Tito 23-10-2005 04:47 PM

My cousin had this game for an old computer it had (I think it was called Amstrad or something similar) and we loved it. The problem is that I broke the disk so he forbade me from playing any other game for a long time  Anyway, I got the remake version from Abandonia Reloaded and now it's time for me to finish it :ok:

Guest 31-10-2005 02:46 PM

Can this game be played with XP? I'm trying to open it and I just get a black screen. I'm played some other old games and they just open in MS-DOS window. Please help! :wall:

Sebatianos 31-10-2005 03:10 PM

Well the game is not WinXP compatible:

http://www.abandonia.com/~sebatianos/comp.JPG

So you either need DOSBox - an MS-DOS emulator, or in this case you can even play the Bruce Lee remake - hosted on our sister site (Abandonia reloaded).

Coldguardian 01-11-2005 12:08 PM

played that game often with a friend of mine on my old C64, the hardest room was the one with the many white balls gliding on the floor, where u have to jump through the whole room... we died very often in this level...

but never stopped playing :D

Guest 23-12-2005 07:54 AM

I know the C64-version. It isnīt one of my favorite fighting games but if you like it, download the C64-emulator for Windows on http://www.viceteam.org/ and the original C64-game on http://www.c64games.com/down-fr.html
This one has better graphics/colours.

TopperH 22-06-2006 03:16 AM

Used to play this game on my father Amstrad.

This was my first game, and I remember that on side b of my disk I had some sort of wrestling game.

Original!

I wonder what an original Bruce Lee game like that would be worth on ebay :-)

Homsar 10-12-2006 02:09 AM

Unless you have a rather old computer, I wouldn't dare try to run this in any kind of Windows---even if you did get it to work it would run much too quickly.

And as for whether the game ends...yes and no. There is a final room that Bruce finally finally jumps, fights, and dodges his way to (I think he does a little dance or leaps around a bit when he gets there---maybe it's Pitfall II for the Atari 2600 where that happens and I'm confusing the two) but then the whole thing starts all over again. That's as sophisticated as most games got back then. We were simple folks who walked 20 miles in the snow to school etc. etc. etc.

I was able to figure out that the things you're supposed to collect are lanters...what the %&$^ are those strange white objects that float across the screen and kill you?

The remake over at Reloaded is quite faithful to the original, so go over there and grab that one if you prefer to play it in XP.

That's why you can easily play it in DOSBox - the great tool which will allow you to run this and most other games here at Abandonia without any problems (because most of these games aren't really WinXP compatable). And although the remake you mention is quite faithful, it's a C64 remake (almost the same as this one, but not quite) and it's still just a remake, not the real deal - as is this one.

Guest 06-03-2007 08:22 AM

Why is this game in the Crypt??? I thought the Crypt was only for 4 color CGA games... The screenshots show this game has 16 colors. Shouldn't it be moved to the ACTION section?

Icewolf 07-03-2007 04:12 PM

The criterion for games to be put in 'The Crypt' is age. Not.... colors....  LOL

Guest 07-03-2007 04:44 PM

Trust me, it's not, I've been around when the new section was opening.

Icewolf 07-03-2007 04:50 PM

I PM'd The Crypt Keeper for further clearance.

EDIT: This sounds actually scary. Or like a threat. LOL

guesst 27-03-2007 10:05 PM

Only 20 days late on my reply.

There is no hard and set criteria for what games get included in what category. That being said, here's the history of the crypt, as I've heard it.

When Kosta started this site it was to be for HIS favorate abandonware games. As the site grew there were games included that were not up to Kosta's personal standards. But he decided these games need a home and so created the category of "The Crypt." While the crypt pretty much is home to any CGA game on Abandonia, the only requirement of The Crypt is that they're so old that save nostalga it's unlikely anyone could enjoy playing them.

Bruce Lee, if I'm not mistaken, is CGA but it took advantage of some clever tricks of the card to improve the graphics... if what you see can be called an improvement. I may be wrong about this, tho. Still, Bruce Lee is definately at home in The Crypt.

Sebatianos 28-03-2007 08:04 PM

Sorry to dissagree with you, but if age would be the only factor, then sooner or later all the games on abandonia should be moved into the Crypt.

When Marko_River and I were proposing the idea of the Crypt it was clearly said it's a place where the four color graphics CGA games should go, because those graphics can burn your eyes out ;)

If you take a look at the Bruce Lee screenshots you can see that the graphics deffinetley use 16 colors and that the graphics are not eye burning, thus the major criteria for the creation of the Crypt itself are not met and the game could easily be in any moved to another section.

BranjoHello 28-10-2007 02:24 PM

Masterpiece

...distant childhood here I come!

Edit: Prefer the remake instead DOS version! ;)

frankw 18-10-2008 10:46 PM

Wow

Anyone notice the size of this file as 39k, yet even the most modern beautifully graphically modern games taht take Gb's to install do not heave the same brilliant gameplay?

Dac X Lee 16-07-2009 08:08 PM

My computer won't open it. I run the exe file (the only file, actually), it opens a full screen of black, as it is preparing to open the game or settings, but resturns to Windows and acts as nothing happened. And, of course, it all happens very short, in a second or two...

dosraider 16-07-2009 08:11 PM

Dosbox ? <<<<< click.
