isnt it a copy of the huge tabletop game wif world in flames?

Nightkin 28-09-2005 07:25 PM

I think its more a conversion of ''Squad Leader''.

Blood-Pigggy 28-09-2005 07:26 PM

I'm not into hex-based war games.
In fact the only one I ever really played and liked was Civil War.

Sanguinor 07-10-2005 12:11 PM

It's Blitzkreig, and board games to that effect, on the PC.

That makes life so much easier... I've spent many an hour just setting up a game of Blitzkreig, then the next week and a half playing it. So yeah, 2 thumbs up! And five stars from me, just because I love turn based strategy and this is brilliant!

Can't find the words really, it's just made me so happy and addicted

laiocfar 07-10-2005 01:39 PM

I am glad that at least one likes the game

Sebatianos 07-10-2005 01:44 PM

So this is actually a computer re-make of a board game?
Should be put in a different genre if that's so.

DSmidgy 07-10-2005 03:46 PM

I don't think it is a board game ... it has too much units. These are historical battles.

I have a question about armour and field guns. Aren't they very underrated because their strength is always about "1" so they always loose against infantry.
Im I using this units in a wrong way?

laiocfar 08-10-2005 01:15 AM

I doesn´t looks like a board game and as far as i researched for review it hasn´t be a board game... How we get to think that it was maybe a board game??? :wall:

About tanks and artillery, no the armor units or other vehicles got amor and anti-tank strenght as place of attack and defence, the infantry got 1 or nothing for these values.
Anyway you are right, artillery (field artillery like anti-tank cannos or AA guns and heavy support artillery like howitzers or mortars) are boths very unrated, only rocket artillery does some real damage and i don´t like the way for use support artillery inside the game.

The best way to defeat the enemy its to cut their supplies. So don´t try to bull units, encircle them or try to destroy enemies HQ and got them cutted off. If you encircle an enemy unit wirh low supply, they will surrender.

Ever play the Civilization Board Game? :D

I started getting into this, it's very good.
Just feels strange for some reason.

laiocfar 08-10-2005 01:23 AM

Civilization, the civ of Sid Meyers was a board game???

Blood-Pigggy 08-10-2005 01:26 AM

HERE
I bought it a loooong time ago.
It can get huge if you play a long game, and games can last reeeaaaal long.
It's almost as addictive as the PC one if you have another person.
It's awesome.

Borodin 08-10-2005 02:47 AM

360 Pacific was waaay in advance of their time for strategic wargames. They had all sorts of options that are common today, but just weren't in the games, at the time. I spoke to one of their designers a number of years ago, and he told me that the guy who led the company was a visionary, but horrible with finances. As a result, the company folded, and never even found someone to buy up its assets.

I still have a few of those games in their original boxes, with all the beautiful, full-color maps.

From what I understand, it's not the same game... Sid Meier played the original Civilization and made his game. We do have the Computerized Board Game on out site though.

It´s Avanced Civilization?

Blood-Pigggy 08-10-2005 06:04 PM

Erm no.
There's a board game you can go out to some toys store and buy.
It's humungous and it has a huge amount of different techs and etc. you can research.

DSmidgy 09-10-2005 12:40 PM

encircle them or try to destroy enemies HQ and got them cutted off

I always try to seperate enemy's HQ from enemy's troops. If you destroy the HQ a new one apperas. If you seperate the units from HQ, the units don't get supplyes and you eliminate lots of units from the map without engagement (just artillery fire).

I don't think the artillery is very underrated, because I can destroy a goot proportion of an infantry unit in a turn. Bou unrealistically it can whipe out a whole stachs of field artillery, armor (even elite), flak. A recon armor is stronger then heavy tank in this game.

I played this (and Word at War series) game a lot but I always had a feeling that I'm using armour unis he wrong way.

I can upload WaW (3 games) if abandonia haven't got them yet.

laiocfar 09-10-2005 06:08 PM

If you destroy an HQ, you can capture some supplies from the reservr and sometimes it didn´t reappears or it take many turns. Anyway, the main goal are the supplies lines. And armor isn´t very special in this game.

About uploads contact Kosta or Sebastianos.

Thank you for the offer, but WaW games are from Avallon Hill, so they are ESA protected. This means we will probably not host them, but I do think you should send KOSTA a personal message.

From an old wargamer...This game was (and still is) revolutionary. There are very few like it. No, it's not a remake of a board game. No, it's not a tactical game or a "first person 'shoot 'em up" game.

This is a thinking man's game. It plays more like chess...move, and countermove.

It resembles many of the great board games that were popular in the late 1980's and early 1990's but doesn't have a 50 page rule book.

If you want action hero type games and patoon or tactical games (like Close Combat, etc.) don't get this.

However, if you want historical insite and understanding on an operational (division and regimental level) as well as a very good time with a friend in head to head play or even solitare ...this is the 'bear and pretzles' game system for you. :ok:

I prefer Panzer Campaings like HPS Smolensk ´41.

JaggenDance 22-03-2006 05:02 AM

i still play it when i can and ive never found a stratigy game that compared to it ... i dont have any of the materials for it thoe ... does any one know where i can get acrobat files of the old instructions?

Ryan Gardner 01-04-2006 04:52 PM

Does anyone have the expansions for this? I absolutely LOVE This game. I had it on a Mac, but now I'm able to play it on DOSBox... which is okay, I guess...

There are a handful of expansions. Utah Beach, Gold Juno Sword, and some others...

Of course, if anyone has the Mac versions that would be cool too... I'm going to try to get my old school mac emulator working too...

The game is super addictive if you give it some time. It's incredibly math based and uses a lot of "realism" to make your war planning work to the max.

You can win the war as the Germans, if you work hard.

Woops, nevermind 01-04-2006 05:34 PM

I opened the game, and felt like an idiot when I saw that all of the expansion packs are already loaded.

Wow, this is obviously a PC port of the Mac Game- they even use the Font Chicago in the game... which is nice, because it makes me not care about getting a mac version working any more...

If you want a cheap trick, always save your games before you execute. Ater the execution phase, if you didn't like the battle outcome - reload the game and execute again. It's like rolling the dice in a game of Monopoly until you get the results you want... Sometimes after three or four times executing, you will get some nice results.

Of course, it is a little cheap - but so is the Russian Army in Valikye Luki... you've got to move your whole front line up and hammer them from the beginning or you get screwed... (Once, back in the day, I pushed their front line back so far that the game had them piling up pieces on just one row of hexes... and my artillery was well trained on those areas... so it wasn't totally realistic, but I was happy that my 12 year old mind could defeat the Russian army)

DSmidgy 02-04-2006 08:54 PM

There are three more games of this type (from same developer) - World at War series:
D-Day: Amerrica Invades
Operation Crusader
Stalingrad (massive map with really lots of units)

Those games are not yet available for download on abandonia.

laiocfar 03-04-2006 01:45 AM

Are u sure that D-Day is different to the scenarios in this page. We got Valikye Luki(Russian front 1942, so battle of Stalingrad isnt there); Operation Market Garden (1944 East Front, attemp of british and free polish army to end the war by an attack in the north with many paradrops); Utah Beach (Battle for Chebourg, Normandy west side); Gold, Sword and Juno (Battle for Caen, Normandy east). The last two scenarios can be D-Day?
Could you send me a pm or mail about these scenarios? I need information about the denveloper, etc, etc, all that u can know about them. See ya

laiocfar 28-04-2006 03:14 AM

JaggenDance, english is not my strong point and i can uderstand very well your problem. So for supply allocations to HQ and change the HQ of any unit , you only can do that during morning turn(first turn with sun of the day). The supply level of each HQ change the fighting abilities of the units under that HQ, so give min. supplies when traveling in secure areas; defensive to make manouvers; and general or attacking to carry on assaults. The red army have a real problem of supplies so a russian commander who wanna a victory will make miracles over the supplies. By example, select the troops on attack mode for the rest of the day, alocate them to a HQ per sector and make that HQ in the most agressive stance. To change the HQ you should go to the HQs menu(press HQs in the menu on the rigth). Here you can change the supply level or see the units under a HQ by selecting the key "all HQs" and it will change to "This HQ". To change an unit of HQ in the HQs menu select the new unit´s HQ and select the unit, press the key "allocate to this HQ" in the menu. :ok:

I think there is a manual at home of the underdogs

Guest 04-05-2006 06:05 AM

thanks for the feed back !! i do have a manual and im doing ok with the suply of my regulars but what i want to do is chang where my HQ's get there suply from ... almosed all of my divisions get suply from either the "3rd Shock Army" or the "2nd Mec Core" but i many of my dividions are much closer to the "5th Guards Shock" who dosent have anyone under it at all

example : how would i set the "357th rifle HQ" that receves suply from the "3rd shock Army HQ" to get suply from the "5th Guards Shock HQ" that is much closer?

:wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall:
try it for yourself! every time i try it just sellects the HQ im clicking on so i cant hit "attach"
:wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall:

little hint: russian artilary use more supply then any other unit in the game and are much weaker then there counterparts in other armys ... if you attach all your artilery to 1 HQ and set it to "minimal" supply you will be able to keep all of your line units in "Attack" supply for the entire game works vary well for me and kind of works in other V4V games as well.
 thanks again for the help guys
and if you can find out how to do that you will have my eternal gratitude

DSmidgy 04-05-2006 03:16 PM

try it for yourself! every time i try it just sellects the HQ im clicking on so i cant hit "attach"

I tryed it and I don't think it's possible.

Click on one Devisional HQ. Than open the HQ menu and navigete with < > buttons to Corps HQ. Attach button doesn't show.

This HQ attachment is possible on World At War games. You can get them at www.the-underdogs.info

Hey all,

I am very, very happy to have found these games. I have played them extensively in the nineties, on a Mac Quadra: V for Victory Maret Garden, Gold Juno Sword, Velikye Luki, Operation Crusader (gotta love those New Zealanders), Stalingrad... My heart rejoiced at finding these titles again.

Imagine my dismay when I found they don't work properly. V4V won't start (and I want to play Velikye Luki soooo bad! Give me my ski regiment!) and Stalingrad (actually a separate download from Abandonia) quits when I try an artillery strike.

I am no hero with DOS boxes. Please help me out!

laiocfar 09-08-2006 12:49 AM

You should give us the OS and setup config.
The game runs very well on win98, so i suppose that you got winXP that is no very friendly to old games. If i am right, post your problem in troubleshooting forum coz this one isnt so hot and i cant give you any aid with winXP.

The Fifth Horseman 09-08-2006 11:47 AM

I strongly suggest you use DosBox.
You can download it here.

If you have any problems with it, try having a look at the official FAQ on the DosBox site.
Basic Setup and Installation
Command Line
Z instead of C at the command prompt
Internal Programs (important, especially MOUNT)
Most of the stuff in there is not really needed, but you would do best to familiarize yourself with the specific topics I linked to.
The mounting of your DosBox games directory, switching the promt to the emulated C: drive and clearing the screen from previous commands can all be executed from the [autoexec] section of dosbox.conf, so you won't have to re-type them every time round.
Frontend programs can help running DosBox with varying configurations for different games.
For both a more accessible user interface and oldschool feel, you can use Norton Commander (get it from our programs and utilities page - scroll down to the bottom to find it). NC might seem awkward at first, but in fact it is a very functional genuine DOS era file manager frontend. It has a plethora of functions that will help you in navigating around the directories, while still retaining the command prompt.

Though all of this might seem complicated, it's very easy once you get used to it. So remember:

DON'T PANIC!!! ^_^

This is one of my all time favourite games. This game is absolutely brilliant, and I have spent literally countless of hours playing it. It is nice to see that there are still other players who enjoy V4 games :) .
