On the internet Archive you can find a gazillion free movies. Granted, they're ancient, but some of them are pretty good (7's and 8's even in the IMdB). DVD-quality mpegs with decent download speeds (I've had up to 3000 kb/s). Also a lot of vintage cartoon (Betty Boop etc.) and old-school documentaries... Oh man, i'm having a ball :w00t:
|
You sure that it's legal?
|
Yup. The movies are released under the Creative Commons license and some are even Open Sourced :ok:
Man, I just DL'ed the original Night of the Living Dead :w00t: |
He-hey. Although there are a lot of old documentaires (I'm hoping to find "The Man in the Barn" - it's a conspiracy story connected to the murder of Abraham Lincoln), there are many great cartoons!
Haven't been through all of it, but some things look really promising (a lot of Betty Boop if nothing else)! EDIT: Oh, oh, oh, and did I mention a TON of western movies??? Excelent site. don't look at these movies as OLD, look at them as classics (many are much better then the ones they're making today - although these are mostly B-rated or less pictures). It's kindda like with the games we have on Abandonia... In fact, I saw they do have some games there... Maybe we should try to connect with them? EDIT2: :kosta: :kosta: :kosta: Reup! This site has got NOSFERATU!!! I spent 29.99$ to get that movie about a year ago, right now I could get it for free. I'm not sorry though it's an excelent movie. So I do recomend it to EVERYBODY!!! |
Thanks Reup, that's a gold mine...
I found Popeye and Superman cartoons of the 40s |

They seem to have lobbied themselves quite a deal there... we might be able to learn from them :ok: <!--QuoteBegin-www.archive.org In order to allow us to do this important work, the Internet Archive successfully lobbied the Copyright Office in October 2003 to allow an exemption to the Digital Millenium Copyright Act, allowing access circumvention for the specific purpose of archiving obsolete software.
|
:omg: , they have the old Tarzan films! Reup: I'm a little kid and you just gave me a whole candystore! :w00t:
:Brain: :kosta: :tnx: BTW - I saw they lobbied for the exception in the copyright law... We should deffinetly get in touch with them. But they also have gmae reviews (without the downloads). Maybe we could co-operate in that department... |

(mental note to self: do NOT forget the update for today) |
Wow Reup- thanks! Some titles I'd never heard of but they sound more interesting than the newer movies. :D Check out Carnival Of Souls for some thrills and chills.
|
Dankeshone! Marcy! Thanks! Hvala! ...LOL
:ok: |

BTW, awesome site. Thanks. Ačiū. :kosta:
|
Ooohh... :tnx:
I've found a Felix cartoon! :ok: |
I suggest you go and look for Tom and Jerry - you'll be more then surprised (I was).
And about the great movies - you simply have to get The Golem and the Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (excelent stuff). They also have the Dick Tracy series :Brain: And there are many other great titles... unfortunately there are many unknown ones too, and they lack reviews... Anyhow, for anybody who wishes to have a good laugh - there are quite a few Buster Keaton movies LOL |
OK, I need serious help here, I've downloaded a couple of things (in .mp4 format) but I can't play them. Windows Media Player doesn't like them (doesn't recognise the filetype) and I've tried downloading Winamp, which will load the videos, and knows how long they are, but when I play them I get no picture and a brief chirp of sound before it stops. Any help?
|
the mp4 format is recognised by Quicktime (which originaly deals with mov files). I don' t know if there are any other aplications which can handle it.
|
But, if you download the mpeg2 files you can convert them to DVD-Video and the mpeg1 files to VCD's and play them on your living room TV :ok: They also play well in Windows Media Player, BSPlayer and a number of others.
|
LOL I've just watched a couple of the 1950s What-to-do-if-a-nuclear-bomb-lands-on-your-house type films.l One fo the pieces of advice is; "If you are outside, and away from any shelters when a bomb explodes, then quickly remove your clothing and go into the nearest stranger's house."
|
That's so you can have one more shag before you die of radiation poisening I guess :D
|
WOW :w00t:
I think I'll be joining this candystore sale right away. Yay! :Brain: |
Er, I saw Nosferatu on here once.
So is it really absolutly legal? :D EDIT: Jesus! They have Night Of The Living Dead! |

|
Heh heh heh... I downloaded 17GB of movies.
BTW - you should really watch A Ferwell to Arms with Gary Cooper. The film is so far away from the book that it's laughable (and to think I had to pay 29.99$ to find that out :wall: - instead of getting it for free here). |
Man, you've got a really fast internet connection
|
 Nice of you to notice (gloat, gloat)
BTW - the most hillarious thing I found there so far was "Now You're talking". It's a silent cartoon promoting the use of a telephone. It's hillarious - you have to watch it! |
What I enjoy about this site is that the quality is very good while the downloads are a reasonable size.
|
Aw, but they don't have any Marx Brothers or Humphrey Boart movies. =/
Check out My favorite Brunette, the laurel and hardy, three stooges, buster keaton, charlie chaplin, and other bob hope movies for some good laughs. XD |

@Spoonman: No, I doubt very much that's Chaplin. |
Would be nice of them to have Evil Dead 2. Uhh... where are the download links in this site???
|
Evil Dead 2? Not in a thousand years man, this stuff is from the early 1930's - late 60's.
Evil Dead 2 might show up in 30 years. :D |
It's from 1987, Einstein. Now, "The Malteese Falcon" would be hard to get being shot in the 30ies. It's sad "Shaft" ain't in the list.

Well, to put it simple: You won't find films here, that are still showing on TCM (Turner Classic Movies, which is most of MGM and WB films). You'll be able to get Paramount, Fox, United Artists and some independent films.
The Maltese Falcon (like most famous Bogey movies) was made by WB, so it's not there. Unfortunately they don't have some other excelent films, which aren't shown anymore, like: Intruder in the Dust, He who get's slapped,... They do have a great collection of western films though (and many documentaries that are really worth watching - if nothing else, you get a glimpse of how they looked at the events, or were trying to present them to the public back then). May I suggest Eleventh Hour? It's a Superman cartoon with Clarke being captured in Japan... It was suppose to be very patriotic. There were many cartoons that were showing the Germans and the Japanese as the ultimate evil (many would simply be considered of poor taste now). |

Evil Dead 1 - 1981 Evil Dead 2 - 1987 Army Of Darkness - 1993 "Title while in production - Evil Dead 2: The Medievil Dead." The link to Night Of The Living Dead doesn't seem to work. |

Didn't work for me so far :( I hope it's a temporary dead link.
|
I think it's just some heavy traffic for downloading that movie (it is the most downloaded movie from the archive). I had trouble getting it as well, but try refreshing a few times (hit F5 if you get a blank screen and it stops loading) and you should get there sooner or later.
|
You're right, it was back on track again this afternoon and I donwloaded it. Just finished watching the film, can you believe I have never seen this movie before? Well it's true. I think it's really good (the rough cutting of some of the scenes make it even better) and the end is definitely worth the wait :ok:
|
A announcement! All download of Movies and games that you not pay for is illegal!
|
Even open source movies? LOL
|
I really must stop downloading freeware games, then - wouldn't want to get into trouble...
|

This sounds a bit strange... |
Quote:
|
Is that the case with archive.org? Cause I could have sworn some of those movies are still for sale. Well, at least night of the living dead. Not that I'm complaining, but I do wonder.
|
Well I know many of those movies are for sale (bought quite a few of them and payed quite a fair amount of money - see previous posts), but I guess they are allowed. They even have stuff out of the American Cngresional library, so I'm quite sure they couldn't get that without the government support.
I'd like ot point out thoug, that some of this stuff is so old it actually fell out of the copyright protection law (95 years). This would mean the movies older then 1910 are not copyright protected anymore (didn't check the dates for all of them, but I've seen some that I'm certain were made before 1920 (puting them just aroud that 95y/o mark). |

Yes Quintopotere u can...It's strange but true(the new world downloading law
|
Copyright on movies lasts for 25 years after the death of the copyright holder, I learn that stuff in school...
|
its no probs.....its 1/1000000000000000000000 that the police get u:D

But sorry, you ain't. |
Wrong chuck, but I think that law is Sweden or europe only.....
|
Well, if it's only in sweden (not even Europe, at least not to my knowledge) one can hardly call it a "WORLD law", wouldn't you agree?
|
I don't know man, I mean, Sweden is one nice country and has some very cool laws. Plus, some very hot women, so, eh, what was my point again?
|
Hah, I just read this in the FAQ of the archive :D
Quote:
|
Yeah, but it was badly informed...They said that after the first of june it would be illegal to download any software, then they didnīt say anything more!!
|
Oh my god, I guess they better close down the Library of Congress!
...or the second option... ignore koskov... Take your pick :bleh: |
If you really need proof:
If you login through anonymous FTP you'll find a directory 'Illegal' ... it's empty. QED :roflol: Edit: this is me being smug with myself :max: |
Well I'm convinced..
..convinced that it is really free that is :) |
I'm feeling almost as excited as I felt when I stumbled on Abandonia. ^_^
|
Sorry guys, but just had to bump this one!
|
Greatly appreciated, that bump. I found "Werewolf In A Girls Dormitory" there. I had it, but I lost it and couldn't find it again, until now. Great site :kosta:
|
And since the site was first mentioned here, some great movies have been added - like Trinity is still my name (with Terence Hill and Bud Spencer).
|
I bet you might not have this, "The Fool of the World and the flying ship" It was an old clay animation. If I find it I will add it, not a bad movie.
|
That site is just incredible: I found Les Vampires from 1915, and with these Frankenstein and Wizard Of Oz movies from 1910 I found on Veoh, I'm a _very_ happy fellow!

It is a russian(?) version of one of the Baron Munchausen stories. The fool of the world (as he is called by his brothers) sets out to find a ship that flies, as the daughter of the Czar has refused to marry anyone; unless she is presented with a ship that flies. The fool encounters an old man who asks for even a crumb to eat. The fool admits that he probably has little more than a crust of bread in his small sack, but that the old man is welcome anything within. The old man pulls out a veritable banquet from the small sack, and the two share a hearty meal. After the meal, the fool explains why he is travelling, and then falls asleep. He awakes to find that the old man, a great wizard, has fashioned a flying ship for him out of snow and ice, but tells him that he must accept anyone who asks as a passenger. As he makes his way to the Czar's capital, he picks up an odd assortment of people with peculiar abilities. The thought of a peasant marrying his daughter so affronts the Czar, that he creates impossible demands for the fool and his companions to meet, but their singular abilities allow them overcome. The fool succeeds, because his kind heart inspires others to help him past his shortcomings. It is a very well executed story and well worth the trouble of finding. |
Seems reall interesting. At the moment I'm getting my hands on The Children Must Learn (a documentary of Apalachi families and home schooled children in US), I'll try and get The Fool of the World latter.
|
This site is an awesome resource - I really recommend "Panorama Ephemera," which is a film made entirely from footage from the Prelinger archives (also hosted on the site) it's a witty, disturbing and sly look at America through it's own media.
My favourite scene is the old 50's footage telling citizens to paint their house and keep their garden tidy to protect it from a nuclear blast :) If you don't already have a healthy distrust of of mass media, this will clinch it for you. It also has all three parts of the awesome BBC documentary "The Power Of Nightmares" great stuff :D It also has the Fleischman Studio's film version of Gulliver's Travels - What more could a girl want?! |
Holy unholy star gods! Nosferatu! GIEV!
