Commander Keen 2 - The Earth Explodes [SOLD]

Yes, I checked the Oldwarez list. That would be why I'm posting. The Oldwarez list claims the games to be sold, so I follow the links. Amazon doesn't recognize them by name, and Ebay doesn't sell new games.

Not only that, but I've downloaded both Commader Keen 1, 4, and that Dreams for free. It's entirely possible that I downloaded them illegally, I won't deny it if I did, but they didn't offer downloads for any of the others.

So, I guess my question is, are these games now Abandonware? And if so, would they be candidates for an upload to Abandonia?

Still being sold by ID Software

No.4 is distributed as shareware and some of the others are too.
I can get you the shareware one of keen 4.

Xgamer4 26-10-2005 01:25 AM

So that's what it is! Shareware! That makes sense. Thanks guys. And I apparently made moogle mad. I'm guessing that's bad.

And to commanderkeen, I already have 1, 4, and dreams. Thanks for offering though. ^_^

Uhm... use the oldwarez list again, and this time click on the SOLD links - not the name links.

Name = info
Sold = shop

I find #4 to be the best Keen in the series. As far as I remember, the whole game is playable, but the story is continued in 5 and, possibly, 6. It get's damn fuzzy in this memory attic of mine :-)

commanderkeen 10-01-2006 03:21 AM

I agree,4,5 and 6 are by far the best.
I dont like the first three, they are not so good, graphically, soundwise and on the story&controls.

If only they were free...

duckpatch 10-01-2006 11:43 AM

If only 3 was available to freely download, then it would be more popular then 4. Is 3 the one with the paintings or something at the end of the level because that ruled!

shareware isn't freeware.

Keen Dreams may be found on one of Softdisk's disks, so it's really still sold by softdisk

...oh thanks...but I perfectly know what a shareware game is.

Can you prove it?

Read here, SoftDisk seems to be changed:

Commander Keen 1 and 4 doesn't mention "Freeware" anywhere on them. They're strictly shareware titles, part of a commercial game series (CK2-3/CK5-6). Plus after quitting, it nags you to order the game. Freeware doesn't do that.

If Abandonia Reloaded started collecting this 'freeware' known as shareware, it'd be a mess. OMG QUAKE EPISODE 1 = FREEWARE etc. It's bad enough the Penumbra tech demo is on the site already confusing people that Penumbra is a freeware game = no.

It's common sense, jeez.

Edit by David: "Can you prove it" was about that:
Keen Dreams may be found on one of Softdisk's disks, so it's really still sold by softdisk

Dave 23-07-2007 10:13 AM

Wait a minute, we're talking about games of the early 90'.
Commander Keen 1 & 4 are freeware because:

1.They aren't still sold.
2.They aren't still protected and so they are abandonware.
3.SoftDisk status (from wikipedia):

Since 1995, Softdisk has been an Internet service provider, Web hosting service, and Internet developer as well, and this eventually became their primary area of business. They have offered local dialup service in the Shreveport area, and Web hosting and development services.

As of 2006, their Web site redirects to that of Bayou Internet, which has taken over their Internet operations. The downloadstore.com site formerly owned and operated by Softdisk is now run by Flat Rock Software, which also publishes former Softdisk product Screen Saver Studio.

Now softdisk is NOT a game developer or publisher.

Understood?
Read here about freeware:

Hi guys. I like Commander keen as much as the next guy born in 1989 but, it ain't no reason to become hill billies alright? XD

The Fifth Horseman 23-07-2007 12:05 PM

The demo episodes - as freely distributable fully complete stand-alone games - do indeed fall under the definition of Freeware as outlined on Wikipedia.

PS. Balvear - change your signature. It's far taller than allowed by the sigrules (100 px maximum height).
