I have actually played this. It didn't work out that well. I simply wasn't good enough reading english (I think I was about 10 years old at the time). Maybe I should try it again, to see if I got better.

Ah, memories...

Dash 05-11-2004 02:42 AM

I wonder if there's a hint or stragety guide existed for this game. I played this game when I was really young, and now I really would like to beat this game. It seems to be impossible to beat this game..

TheVoid 05-11-2004 01:53 PM

I don't know where to find a walkthrough-otherwise I'd have uploaded it-, but there's a good site in which you can find quite some informations! :ok:

Is this good??

TheVoid 05-11-2004 05:50 PM

I'm afraid it's not. It's far too complex to be the game we're talking about. But thanks for the effort, Omulet :ok:

"These were times the computer gave you only the skeleton of the figure, a small symbol, which in your mind became something exceptionally detailed and realistic, looking like just born from the pencil of a John Howe or a Ted Nasmith. At least it did in mine." -TheVoid

-That perfectly sums up this, my first PC game ever played. I'm 23, and there is simply no way to explain to others the effect this game had on my creativity. Simply amazing. What a joy to actually have to map out the castle on grid paper. Sorry for the wistfulness.

bluetard 02-02-2005 07:07 PM

Oh my goodness, this is incredible. I remember playing this on an old computer my Dad had where I had to boot from a DOS disk. I would always collect all the items and pile them up in the gate courtyard until I ran out of room. Later I figured out that you were supposed to use the items. I never did beat it though, make I'll figure it out this time. :ok:

Galda 06-02-2005 05:30 AM

I have this for my IBM PC and I absolutely love it! It's not as good as Rogue, but it's its own adventure game and I cannot compare it to a completely different game, however it is excellent and I think if you like games similar to Rogue then get this :Titan:

Basti 07-02-2005 03:01 PM

:D This game is absolutely cool. I've played this all night long, when I was 8 years old

Jessica 31-03-2005 06:19 PM

Hey! Just wanted to add my memories. I also played this game as a child -- it was one of the first computer games I learned to play when I was 8. What has amazed me is that even though now I'm 25 and haven't played the game in years, I remembered the basic set-up and where the sword was. My sister also remembered things about the game, even though she would have been 5 when we first got. We must have played it for hours on end to still remember it.

And yes, the monsters were way better in my head than they could have been as real graphics!

Thanks for sharing this!

Sound FX 05-04-2005 11:11 AM

Now-a-days games r full of lightning v-sink n all that, but the old games can still makes us pass hours n hours without all that new stuff.
the exency of the older one's is a real game, not how good it looks, how many official products they have, I have almost all the new games there r, but still I play Transporters Tyvoon deluxe, One must fall 2097, colonization n all that...

a word for the todays software house's:

make good games, not preaty images and good beats...

stay well

Play mutch!!!!!!!

oldschool 05-04-2005 09:07 PM

this game is beatable! if you want to know how, post and ill tell you

Wong 08-04-2005 01:57 AM

I still have this game on my Amstrad (below my desk, getting in the way of my feet a bit). I never did work out how to fight effectively, though - mostly it was a case of wandering in to the garden, getting the message "The SNAKE bit you!" a few times and dying.

I was terrified of the flooding dungeon, as well.

Simon 02-05-2005 06:22 AM

what program do you use to run it?

ger 11-06-2005 11:53 PM

memories for me also, first game i ever played, every tuesday afternoon in school we would play it for an hour as a group, whoever got to control the computer felt special, it was so cool, think there was another similar one i knew as "grannys garden"???? i downloaded castle but it wont work for me, says some file is missing contact whatever, damn!! :wall:

Valcados 21-06-2005 05:11 PM

Oh wow, oh wow, I'm not the only person in the world who remembers this game.

At the time, this was 10 times cooler than all the final fantasies combined.

I actually beat it, when I played it on the old Tandy as a preteen, but it took a hell of a long time to figure out how. I remember thinking how much potential the game had, if only Kevin Bales would have extended it, let you walk into the village outside the castle, etc.

I even tried to get my mom to give me $10 so I could register the shareware.

Robert 21-07-2005 04:50 AM

:D Thought that I had Castle game. GF had it. Have all the printouts of the rooms, items that can be had, a floorplan of the castle, but can't remember the commands to get stuff. Know Look Wall, floor, etc, but thats about it. Still have the original floppy. Works just fine on XP. Well, might be able to scan and upload whatever is needed - such as all the items that can be had and where they are. Just thought that if anyone was interested. Amazing that it was almost 20 years age! Bob Smylie

Aiwendil 26-08-2005 05:44 PM

This is the first computer game I ever remember playing; I can still remember the exhileration of finally beating it.

But now when I try to play I can't beat even the easy monsters (like the snake)! Is this because the game ran at the PC's processor speed and thus is now running too quickly? Is there some way I can get it to run at a slower speed? I've had the same problem with a few other really old games.

Rodentia 09-10-2005 12:34 AM

I can't kill anything either even with the weapons. It's really dissapointing because I loved this game as a kid and was sooo excited to find it again. ANybody have any suggestions?

:help:

IdExMachina 19-10-2005 11:08 AM

This was one of the first games I ever played; in fact, it helped teach me to read.

15 years later, turns out Kevin Bales is my jazz theory teacher at college.

whatshisface 15-12-2005 10:05 PM

darn. its not realy interactive is it. I had a cross and i wanted to strike the demon with and it just said what. Any help?

Guest_Matt 03-01-2006 07:07 AM

I have the same problem with the speed of the game. I tried using MoSlo to make it run slower, but the screen would just crash after I pressed play and said that I was missing the castle.run file. The file worked fine without MoSlo, but the speed was too fast for me to kill any monsters. Are there any other speed changing programs that I can use to get it to work?

Guest 16-01-2006 05:05 PM

Use DosBox
With ctrl + f11 you can slow down the CPU Cycles. Just get it to about 200 or 300 and the game is playable.
But then, I'm a little stuck. I can't get the fairies and the vampire out of the way. Any help?

Guest 16-01-2006 07:13 PM

I did get the fairies and the vampire out of the way, found almost all items except:
-huge gem
-crystal ball
and I don't know how to get in the wizards secret chamber.

Does anyone have tips
and how can you get the full points, because you can't get all items

Robbert 22-01-2006 01:41 PM

Owyeah I love this game.
I used to play it when I was about 7 years old, on my dad's old DOS
I will always memorized how afraid I was when I entered the room with a monster (i'm not enrirely sure what, guess the '@' :D ) and at one of the higher floors in the castle was a harp or somethin'

So like everyone on this topic I've got great youth-memories on this game, and I love to read them
By the way, I recently found another (almost ancient) game: Sokoban. Man, I was addicted to that game.

But anyway I hope to check out all my youth-games out soon, so I better start searching right away. Have nice memories with the games, y'all ;)

CammyWhite 27-01-2006 03:44 AM

The rest of the keys work find excepts the directional pad and the ones on the number pad. ITS SO FRUTRATING!! Please someone help!!

Paige 19-02-2006 12:58 AM

I played this game for years and was never able to get quite 1500 points. I spent many a night as a child lying awake pondering those darn CHAINS attached to the dungeon wall. They "look magical," and every other item that looks magical has some secret purpose or opens to reveal a secret passage, etc. I must have taken every item in the castle into that dungeon room and waved it, rubbed it, "looked it," beaten it on the wall - all to no avail! Does anyone know if there even IS any secret here - or how else it's possible to get the full 1500 points?

And another question!! Sometimes the castle walls disintegrate and weird demons called "14" etc appear. Is this a bug in the programming, or is it caused by letting the evil magic out of the dungeon (not diligently locking the door behind you every time)?

And for those who say it's too easy to die, no way! You obviously came along a little too late, with too fast a computer! Back in the good ol' days, you could almost kill the snake without sword OR helmet!

Guest_Paul 18-04-2006 12:52 AM

I was 35 when we got our first PC in 1986. This was the first game we (My wife & 7 yr. old son & I) ever played. We beat it after about 6 months and many hours on the phone with a friend trying to do the same. The graphics were very basic by todays standards. But that wasn't important. It made you think. Our son ended up graduating with a degree in Computer Science. :~)

Oh my god! You guys actually have this game! :Brain: I use to play it on an old DOS machine we had when I was a kid. Awesome!

To reply to the reviewer's claim that Golden Wombat was an illegal clone of this game .. .

According to the author of Golden Wombat, it seems that GW was an original game..

Frustrating! No one posted the solution yet!

I am stuck at what to do at the winding passage that floods. Something about the flask perhaps?

Oh my god!!!! I'm only 22 and I remember playing this!!! I was given an amstrad when I was really young and I remember I hated it for a few years because I had no idea what was going on :hairpull: but then one day I came back to it and was hooked :brain:. I miss those days when a game wasn't just about how good the graphics were :monkey_dance:

or any other games that you liked when you where kid would be helpfull.

Dnyel 19-08-2006 05:30 PM

I haven't played this in a million years, but if I remember correctly this took a hell of a lot of trial and error and a piece of jeweelry may help. I also recall waving the wand quite a bit, but as it's a little foggy.

Saving/Restoring

I'm playing in Dosbox and I can't seem to restore games. I type "Save GameD" and get the response "Game Saved." When I get killed, I am given the option to play again, at which point I say "Y." When the new game opens I type " Restore GameD" and get an immediate error beep that the command was not understood. Any help in what I am doing wrong?

Thanks.

Dnyel 19-08-2006 05:44 PM

I can't help with everything, but to find where the gem is you might want to take a look at the garden from a different angle.

Another game that brings back good memories of my childhood. Hope I can complete it this time. :titan:

bork 27-08-2006 02:00 PM

God dammit!
I haven't played this game for almost 20 years... and I still remember most of it.
Too bad I'd forgotten about that trap in that tunnel though... still, 1250 points ain't bad for a first try.

Now, if I just can remember how to make the fairies happy and where the hell that secret room is...

BTW, about the save games:
The save games get's corrupted by default, prolly some bug in the saving process.
And (AFAIK) if you manage to load a saved game, you most likely end up getting killed by "Angry Demon 34" anyways.

Bork 27-08-2006 03:40 PM

Ha! I got a finally got perfect score! :brain:

Seriously, how stupid was I as a kid? I seem to remember spending almost an whole summer trying to beat this game. To be fair, I was only about 6 or 7 years at the time and hadn't learned a single word english (except for "Police" and "Hands up!", but those doesn't really count) before I started playing the game, but, still!?

Never the less, this was a great trip down memory lane.

You'll need the necklace off the statue on the second floor to stop the passage flooding. Then you need to open the secret passage in the tunnel (WAVE WAND???). I think that gets you to the King's sceptre which you can then take to the front gate and wave to open the gate. This will win you the game.

If you do a LOOK NECKLACE, it says something like "Protection from traps"

It's been 15 years since I've played it so my memory is dim.

Guest 26-10-2006 05:07 PM

Ok, I finished it. The easiest way to do it is to just stay clear of ALL the monsters. You need the following to complete the game
- Magic wand
- Lamp
- key (get it from kings desk)
(maybe the necklace from the statue on 1st floor)

and that's it. You gotta unlock the locked door, go into the "winding passage", then "WAVE WAND" and go into the secret room to find a scepter. Go back to where you started, and "WAVE SCEPTER" and it's finished, but with awful low score.

No need to finish the game to get a high score, though. And if you don't kill a few monsters, your score will still be low. I collected all the treasure I could remember, and left all monsters alive, and ended up with 700 points. Another time, I died, but had killed a lot in addition to gathering treasure, and got 1150 points, which is my high score.

PAIGE!! Your post finally helped me find this game!! I lived with the same problem about the chains. I have been looking for this game for years as I played it as a child. I decided to do a google search this time with these chains. I typed in "look magical" and chains and castle game. Thank you Thank you for your post! I have a mac now and will have to figure out where to play this game on a PC or if I can use my mac...

Use dosbox in combination with D-Fend, set the cpu cycles to around 300. I've been playing it this afternoon and it works just like it did on my dad's old 8086 :D

Guest_Deedee_* 14-04-2007 10:21 AM

Is this the game Tom Hanks plays in the move "BIG"?

All I can remember from the movie goes something like:

"Melt the monster."
"What do you want to melt him with?"

I remember playing a game like that LONG TIME ago, but can't remember what game it was but I'm pretty sure it's the one featured in "BIG" and so just curious if this is it, anyone know?

Thanks to you all, I finished this game after 25 years ! It was the very first game I ever played together with my children but never found the end. From time to time i started it new and found something out but not the finish. Castle stayed in my mind as a never fullfilled task. yesterday I read the enties and now I am through.

I am so glad that there are more friends of the old adventures and they are not forgotten .I play textadventures now like " enchanted castle" what I discovered bylooking for help for castle in the internet. :kosta:

The one puzzle I have not been able to figure out in this game is the magical chains in the dungeon. I wave both the wand and scepter at them, but nothing happens.

Do these chains do anything (and if so, what's the magic trick), or are they just for show?

cnquist 15-06-2009 08:47 PM

This is a walk down memory lane! Its hard to imagine that 1) games have come so far since I played this game and got stuck in it so long ago and 2) I considered this a good game at the time.

It's still good but only due to nostalgia factor. I may just try and beat it now, since it is now much easier to get walkthroughs than it was back in the day!

guest 30-12-2009 11:04 AM

Hi!

I downloaded DOS and I have the helmet and the sword but I can't kill any monsters! I get killed anyway, slower images or not.
How do you do it? I tried to type things like "use sword" but nothing works! Please help!
You can manage to get a lot of treasures without killing them but you can't get the lamp without killing the snake.

I am all excited to play to that game again! Good memories!

Thanks!

Tips: vampires don't like holycrosses and fairies love music.
