A couple of years back, there used to be a search engine for abandonware games called Gangsters. Does anyone know why they closed down?

I never knew that search engine, but if it pointed to warez, chances are they got hassled by copyright owners, lawyers and the whole tabernacle so much they gave up or were forced to give up. Other than that... I don't know.
