Hey, I just thought you guys should know something I found, I have to pcs one XP and a 98se and when I use the dos startup disk from the XP machine in my 98SE one ( gotten by formating the floppy and ticking the system box or typing format A: /s in the run box)It works great for most dos games aslong as thehy don't require EMS It even has sound. I would either attach it or submit the files themselves but I'm not sure if that would be legal as XP is still supported. Anyway if this is helpfull could the admins sticky it?

If you have a W98 PC why you need a bootdisk?
Most games run directly in W98.
If needed, you can go in dosmode, even enabling EMS if you want.
If you need a bootdisk in W98, for some recalcitrant games, W98 can make his own, no need for a XP PC.
If you have sound it's pure luck, simply means that your W98 hardware is compliant with the XP dos settings.
And as gregor said, AW sites usually have bootdisks.
Should you need specific ones plenty on teh internet, in all flavors.

On a side note:
I strongely advise against the use of NTFS read/write dos bootdisks in XP-Vista for gaming, they aren't meant for that. (Yes those exist, even CDs or USB ones :tai: )
It is extremely easy to screw up your XP-Vista PC with those.

This topic is about bootdisks I thought ....Did you read the first post?

He talks about making a bootdisk on an XP PC to use in a W98 PC.
I only wondered WHY you would do such thing, it's nonsense almost.

The second part of my post is about using dos bootdisks -(even bootCDs or USBbooters)- who are capable of read/write on a NTFS harddisk -(they exist , you know)-, that's what my warning is about, don't use those things for gaming purposes. They are meant to been used as system tools disks. (recovery - sys maintenance - ....).

And it works as long as they don't need to use EMS.
Which doesn't make it too useful, especially considering Win98's DOS reboot option...

It is exactly the same than creating a bootdisk with DOS or Win98. I don't really see the point... Except that not a lot of people know they can create bootdisks first of all.

One thing with creating a win98 boot disk is that you can alter the menu, so you can select EMS enabled/disabled according to need, as well as CD-ROM drive enabled/disabled. The latter can be useful if you need a lot of the 640 kb ram. Disabling the CD-ROM will free some of that.

Boot from a XP bootflop -( or simply open a comm-window)- and input mem /c, you will see that the dos structure is completely different than when creating a bootdisk under W98.
For gaming purposes you're much better of with a W98 bootdisk(FAT32-16 r/w) or a Dos6.22 (FAT16 r/w)one.
Those are much more gaming compatible than the XP one.
The only reason that you need 'eventually' a bootflop under W98 is for really recalcitrant games, and those will NOT run on the XP bootflop.

And remember: tomf has a W98 PC also, he wants to use the XP bootflop on his W98 PC.
I suppose he didn't knew he can make a good bootflop under W98 ? (NOT the ERB disk, however when setup correctly this one also works)
Or simply download a bootflop image, complete with mouse support and CD support.

And as MM remarked: fully customisable.
