How come the "Your rating" for most games averages out to 3?

I've noticed that regardless of how the editor rated, how crappy the game actually is, IMHO, or whatever, the "Your Score" of most of the games on this site are around 3. I just find that unusual and I guess it sticks around 3 due to that being the averages between the lower and high ratings.

People have their opinions on games. It seems like there is an equal number of lovers and haters of that certain game.

Personally I think it's a conspiracy that goes right to the top.

imo it's 2 kinds of people (except for those who rate for real): those who think 'omg i played dis when i was little, 5 points' and then kids who are like 'omg those graphix sux, omfg 1'

As they are working mostly underground right from the cellar would probably be more appropiate, no?

Nobody said FNORD

It just shows that the main component of the public rating is white noise (a random signal). But there are some very exceptional games that overcome this somewhat--case in mind.

3 (or 7) is a magic number..... it's the number reviewers give if they can't decide on a score.

Yeah, the scoring system is a joke really - too many childish people who are voting a 1 because it *looks* old or bad or especially if it can't be downloaded.

My favorite game, Beneath A Steel Sky, deserves at LEAST a 4/10. On HOTU I believe it had a 8.5/10 or so. I think the fault lies with the fact that everyone can vote even if they're not logged in. This invites many people who aren't serious about old games to vote 1. As a result, I'm forced to vote 5/5 on nearly every game I like just to try and get that rating up to where it should be. I mean jesus, Monkey Island 2 got a 3.7.

The people who did that deserve to go to a horrible place and use Vista forever.

I don't even bother looking at the your score bit anymore, its far too inaccurate. I agree with red_avatar, registration should be required, in case people like my little brother come and vote with opinions based on the screenshots.
