And what is this doing in Freeware? Formerly commercial -> Approved.

I'd love to try this game since MechCommander is one of my favorites. Even though I am afraid the download size would be too great for AB. Cellar maybe?

I'm afraid it won't be as good as the original but you can't have everything isn't?

I may have this already online. Checking after work.

Making a note: statements by some users suggest that a copy build from the Shared Source release may be more compatible with later Windows versions. This link should be added to extras when the game is updated:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downl....aspx?id=11457

Unripped version clocks at ~600 MB according to FileShack: http://www.shacknews.com/file/20899/...er-2-free-game
On other note, there are plenty of videos in the game that theoretically could be downsampled or removed.

Installed directory: 500 MB
Videos: 100 MB
Sounds: 200 MB
+Music: 100 MB
+Tutorial voiceovers: about 40 MB
+Pilot voices (PAK files): about 26 MB
+Sound effects (PAK file): about 14 MB
+Campaign-related audio: about 15 MB.

Music is stored as 44 kHz stereo ADPCM. Could be reduced to 22 kHz mono ADPCM for about 3/4th size reduction.
Tutorial/campaign speech is stored as 22 kHz mono ADPCM (some of it is as PCM). Could be reduced to 11 kHz mono ADPCM.
Haven't looked much into the PAK files, but the structure appears to be standard concatenated data structure - an offset table at the beginning, the data stored as standard WAVE files (header and all).

EDIT: And actually applying these nearly puts us at goal size. I've cut down the audio size by 50%, if you take out the cutscene videos a 7Z clocks at 275 MB. However, I'm looking into downsampling the videos (all of them) rather than tearing them out - they use 44 kHz audio, so there's room for downsampling that and reducing the overall bitrate to save space. A 35% size reduction should be possible, probably more if needed.

EDIT: Turns out the version I have is not the original release, and the map editor is broken. Will look for a working one.

EDIT: Got the editor working. It needed a couple registry keys. 266 MB final size, with movies downsampled to half their original bitrate (with audio stream downsampled to 11 kHz 16 bit mono signal), voices downsampled to 11 kHz 16 bit mono and music downsampled to 22 kHz 16 bit stereo (both music and voices using ADPCM compression to reduce the filesize further).
