Greetings...

I know this is probably not the ideal place to post this question, but I want to know if anybody else has stumbled upon this problem...

I have a fairely new computer (AMD Athlon processor) wich has the bad habbit to just freeze whenever I am playing any DOS type of game... I have no problem to start the game, neither to star playing it... but 9 times of 10 the computer just hangs up suddenly, then it refuses to respond to anyting besides shutting of the power...

Anybody encountered this problem or anyone who has a solution???

We can't really help you until you tell us your computer specs.

The most basic answer without info on your part would be to advise you to use DOSBox.

You could also look here first.

I had that problem, but when I had 486. In game Colonization this 'bad habit' happened sometimes on my comp. But, I must say, game also has this problem even on my Celeron with Win2000, but Alt+Tab solves the problem.
I suppose you have WinXP on your PC, haven't you? Then it isn't surpising. After 3 weeks or so having XP on my comp, most of my DOS applications (and even some of Windows too) started to crash to desktop. So, if you have WinXP, I suggest you to change it on something more well known. Then, I think, you'll solve half of your problems. At least, not all of your applications will crash.

I tried using DOSbox, but the game I tried to run (Magic the Gathering) did not start using DOSbox...

Yes I have windows XP... but on my old computer I also had that OS and I never hanged up when I was running an old game...

Alt+tab doesent work in this case since the computer completely freeze... The only thing the computer reacts to is basically to shut down the power using the powerswitch

The error occur almost any time I try to run some typ of old game aplication: DOS games, old windows games like Magic or nes emulators...

Dos Box is only for DOS games so you DONT need it for playing Windows based games.

ZNes works fine for me(XP here :bye: ).
I have similar trouble with another old Windows game, Chaos Gate that is.

:wall: :w00t:

Hey, maybe something lies within the hardware ad not software, huh?

Do you have any aplications running in the background(anti-virus, download managers, messenger)? Try switching them of.
Can you give your pc specs and OS version,it would help alot.
One more thing, who gave you the bright idea of buying an Athlon?

I know it is only for DOS games.... kind of obvious regarding the title of the software ;)

but I had to try something since I am starting to get sick and tired of a computer that is hanging up at radom ocasions....

In fact DOS Box is only needed to slow games. If you want to run more well-built game, such as WarCraft II, for example, then you should better run it from Windows, because DOS Box won't take it. I ran Master of Orion on DOS Box 0.62 and game wasn't playable. It worked so slow, that... well, you know, what I mean. And even increasing of cycles won't help.

I didnt buy it... one of my girlfriends friends bought a new computer, and asked us if we wanted their old... and since the computer I had before that was a:(128Mb RAM, 400Mhz and 6Gb HD); It is kind of obvious I did not stick with the old one....
