Hey guys :bye:

A lot of you probably don't know this, but my major in college was sociology/anthropology (and east asian studies, hehe). I love studying different cultures, in a wide variety of subjects.

So, I was talking to a friend today about the differences between Americans and Europeans that we found strange. So I have a little experiment in discussion in mind...

I'm very curious to see what you guys find strange about cultures other than your own.

I realize this has the possibility of being a huge can of worms, but please do me a favor, and try to be as polite as possible about your answer. Also, take other people's responses with a grain of salt, this is someone's perspective, and might not actually be totally based on fact. If someone says something about your country that you don't agree is true, just try pointing it out nicely.

We might actually learn something about each other, whee. :D

To start off:

I find it very strange that Europeans put mayonnaise on their french fries, and butter on their sandwiches (but that last might just be Belgians :bleh: ). Yucky.

I find it weird that Americans always have to drive everywhere, even the smallest distance.

Butter has to go on a sandwhich, it's just not a sandwhich without butter.

But mayonnaise on chips is not right. But you want to hear something that's not right Thousand Island dressing on Pasties, I love it. Mmmmmmm, tasty.

EDIT I'm eating pastie with Thousand Island Dressing right now, it's funtastic, you all have to try it. :D

I don't understand why americans have to say everything different. For example aluminium.

taikara 06-04-2005 05:08 AM

What? It's aluminum ; P

Speaking of weird speech, why does Australian slang not make any sense whatsoever? :D

What IS a billabong, ANYWAY?

Iron_Scarecrow 06-04-2005 05:31 AM

Billabong is some kind of camp were you [AUSSIE SLANG]boil the billy[/AUSSIE SLANG]. LOL

Well I think its a camp. But I could be wrong.

taikara 06-04-2005 06:15 AM

A couple of my friends actually wanted to do that... the piercings up the back are called corsets... gah. :eeeeeh:

Iron_Scarecrow 06-04-2005 06:18 AM

I still fail to see what you get out of doing it.

Kon-Tiki 06-04-2005 06:29 AM

Another cultural thing I don't get, is why people in the Philipines let themselves be crucified each year with Easter
