I'm hoping one of you masters of obscure abandonware will remember this game and remind me of the name of it.

It was a top-down space-based game. You could recruit various crewmembers through the storyline, and I remember one was a computer whiz you could use to upgrade the software on your ship and make it better such as making the sensor returns on your ship make you look like some other ship once you had scanned the right specs. Another of the crewmembers you could get was a manta ray. I'm sorry I can't be of more help, but I just remember little snippets of stuff. The manta crew member is probably going to be the make-it-or-break-it. I remember this game was really cool in its day, but I just can't seem to remember what the name of it was! Please help if you can!

Was it a game from the Star Control series?

No, it wasn't Star Control. I'm very familiar with those 3 games. If I had to relate it to another game, the closest I can think of as far as perspective and gameplay would be MegaTraveller 2.

Another point about it I thought of that may or may not help is that this guy that you're sent to kill, once you fight through his base and get to him, you find out he's an AI, so you have to destroy the computer he inhabits.

Other than that, there are several planets you can fly between, and, as I said before, you can scan the specs of various ships and, depending on how well you've hacked your ship's software, can make your ship appear to be another ship on enemy sensors (at least until you get within visual range, then they try to kill you). And I remember that the gun I usually ended up using most looked like a Desert Eagle, but had a huge ammo capacity in it's mags, so I didn't have to reload so often... very important in one area where you come down a hallway into a small army of bad guys you have to kill. LOL

Oh, and it was probably released between... oh, about '89 and '94 if that helps at all.

A space game that reminds me of MegaTraveller 2 is "Sentinel Worlds I: Future Magic" 1988 Dos,
though I don't remember any Manta Rays in it. Look it over and see if it's familier. Any other details?
Was it a popular commerical game, or a hidden gem, dos, windows, or other?

Dang your mention of the Manta is making my brain tingle, also look over the Breach series which
are similier to SW:FM above. And then you might look over the Mobygames Space RPG list for
even more ideas.

Apparently not THAT popular, as none of us seem to remember it. LOL It would have probably been a DOS game, but late DOS, I'd imagine... 6.2x or so. It sounds like it's going to come down to my brother and I going through storage boxes of stuff to see if we still have the disks for it stored somewhere. If we ever do find them, I'll be sure to contact the admins here, as I'm WELL sure it's out of protection by now.
