Now it's time for discussion about which RPG's were the best once, I guess. Not that only adventures can be great games. :sneaky:
My first RPG at all was WarWizard. It was shareware though, but it was such exiting, I played it probably around 15-20 times anew. Too bad I wasn't able to find the full version of it everywhere even up today...
And the official site where they say they'll put the full version somewhere later up still contains just the shareware version and they seem to not care about that much...

Well, also there's another one, which became it's place in my heart the first time I played it. Lands of Lore - The Throne of Chaos (which wouldn't hurt to be put up on our site for download, btw.). As usual for Westwood games of that times, the graphics were drawn excellent and music was really catching. You can listen to 4 samples of it on the main site as an example, but many music tracks in the game sound even better.

Just too bad that none of the RPG's on computers come anywhere close to the RPG's in paper & pen format :sneaky:

Well, if you don't count good music, often nice drawn graphics and sound + speech (in some games) that add to the lively atmosphere of the games on computers that are missing in the pen & paper RPG's, then yes... :sneaky:

I hope we can talk about non dos games on this forums, because my favourite rpg of all time is Ambermoon by Thalion on the Amiga. Windows users can try WinUAE, the best Amiga emulator and play the game.

You should really try this out. You'll be amazed.

I have just begun playing RPG games so I don't really know.

I do know that, the part that I have played of Planescape Torment, was very very immersive (never finished it)
Betrayal at Krondor looks like fun... but not very friendly towards people who haven't read Raymond E. Feist's books (me, for example)
I can vaguely piece the story together from what I have heard of people who have read the books... but there are still a lot of holes which kinda ruin the thing.

Morrowind was fun, but not the best ever.
Knights of the Old Republic was very immersive, but its more of an ActionRPG than a regular RPG game.
Gothic and Gothic II are fun and all.
all in all I can't really say there is a game that deserves a title like "best RPG of all time" meinly since I haven't played enough of them to make a real opinion.

Some of the games I've enjoyed the most are (in no particular order):

Fallout 1 and 2
Ultima VII - Black Gate
Realms of Arkania 2 - Star Trail
Eye of the Beholder 2
Bard's Tale 1
Legend of Blacksilver
Planescape: Torment

All these are highly recommended.
There are loads more that I love.. Just can't bother listing them all here ;D

Baldur's Gate is probably my favourite RPG. Great story, great world, lots of classes, great humour, great characters, interesting setting. It's also huge, but not as huge as it's sequel Baldur's Gate II.
