Yes, you weren't using DOSBox, that is what was wrong. Just about every DOS game requires DOSBox to run correctly, except SQ2.

Have you tried using DOSBox's support for real CD-ROM drives?
mount intro
mount -cd
then probably:
mount d (D):\ -t -cdrom -usecd (0) -atapi -ioctl
Where (D) is the actual drive letter of your DVD...
