I can give you advice, year sure. But my advice will probably not be the best in the world. As I said, I'm not a master in VB6 programming. If you have a question, just come with it, I will answer if I can.

Don't use C++, it is a very hard language to learn, and it is very hard to develop windows style programs. I think you should use C# or VB.NET, you can get a free IDE for developing in these languages from this
link. If you want to learn C#, take a look on this
website.
The reason why I used C++, is that I have an education as an electronic engineer, and C++ is a very good language to program small microcontrollers.
