Yes there are really stupid projects. Like SETI, or the one about looking for ever greater primer numbers.

Over here electricity is the least significant of everyday expenses, and I don't even think the computer is the greater part of it... :P Besides since any consumption ends up as heat, in winter any surplus is really saving you heating expenses. :bleh:
