![]() Its the Wild West you fool! Everyone likes Cowboys, or girls...or cows....anyways!
Sometime in 1911; My name is Austin Parker. I was born and raised in Armadillo, Cholla Springs County. From birth i've worked in Cholla Springs and Hennigans Stead moving cattle from one point to another with my brothers and father. It's been a simple life, and Armadillo is a bucket load safer then the rest of the frontier, but now that im 17, I figured it was time to leave. Talked to my pa and mama, pa's against the idea but ma says travel is good for a boy. I says to pa "We got lots o' hands on the ranch, a few months in'it allot" but he say's back "We ain't got the money to let one go, the least you could to is work at Critchley's ranch to the south" but I would have none of that. Our argument got me so mad I cursed the man before storming into town to drink. By the time I got home, everyone was asleep, and I snkuck into the house, a little wobbley from the alchohal. I got to my room, gathered up all my things and headed for the corral, where I Got my bay pony saddled and got our cattleman revolver from a cabinet in the corral. We kept the gun incase of Coyote's or something getting into the pen's and bothering the animals. I left $5 in it's place, and eyed my wallet. $15 doesn't get you far, but i'd find work somewhere south, maybe on the oil rigs at Plainview? I had a cousin, Jacob Rawlins, who worked down there, and i figured he could get me in, and after i made a few dollars, i'd contineu journeying Without further adew, I left the farm. A few of the dogs gave longing glances as my horse and i made our way down the road, and in no time we were in the open deserts west of Armadillo, the moon painting everything a stark blue in the contrasting dark of the night. A few Coyotes gave hoots in the distance, and i checked the revolver to make sure it was loaded, before contineuing along the train tracks. We lobbed through the night, and by morning, the plainview oil towers were in the distance. I rode into the camp, a couple of the men greeted me with nods, and I asked for Rawlin's, they pointed me to an open flap tent where Rawlins and some other men were smoking. when i got off my horse, Rawlin's, who was a year older then me, but just a tad shorter, greeted me with a long hug. "Austin! What're you and your sorry ass doing down here!" He said smiling "Just livin', was wonderin' if I could find a job out here on the rigs actually" "What, Ranch life to boring for ya? Took your time, I left when I was 16, remember?" "Oh yea, your dad had a fit and a half over it, I did the same thing, pa wanted me to work the ranch still, but I said no" Rawlin's whistled, "won't be to happy that you took the shooter too, hey?" "Nope. " "Oh well, we need the staff, lost a guy last week cause he broke his arm and both legs when his horse slipped off a cliff up by Del Lobo" "Jeez, you just can't be to careful" "Nope" Rawlin's showed me around, and soon had me working with the others. The men here were easy to get along with, and after a week I had made another $10. At night we'd sit around a campfire, singing and talking, but on occasion, Frank Wyatt would get up and start something. Frank was this wreche sorta guy, probably in his thirties, always accompanied by his two mexican friends, and often he'd be drunk and start something that usually ended in a fist fight. This was the usual night time routine, and about three weeks into my job, Wyatt started another fight, this time he pulled out his shooter, and shot the guy, a fellow named Mark McCarty. Now I didn't see the fight, but i heard the shot, and right after Wyatt and his boys was gone on horses, sped off into the desert, with McCarty bleeding to death as we crowded around him. He only lasted ten minutes, and by that time we were ready to kill Wyatt.... Saturday Morning. Me, Rawlin's, and two others set off west along the river then turned north as we reached Gaptooth ridge, but that was no sign of Wyatt, and by nightfall, we were up by Cueva Seca, and we camped the night. At dawn we headed to Benedict Pass, and circled south again, and were back at Plainview by evening, and still had no sign of Wyatt. some were saying he went south into Mexico, but no one was sure, cause they saw him riding west. At dawn, me and Rawlin's decided Wyatt had to pay. McCarty was a good friend, and Wyatt killed him for nothing. We decided that he may have headed east, so we headed east along the Del Lobo cliff sides, until we were almost at Hennigans stead, and by that time it was already night. we camped east of Riley's Charge, then made a notion to head south the day after tomorrow. We killed a deer, and let the meat smoke for the better part of the day, and at night ate the venison, and fed the scraps to Coyotes. Wednesday And that morning, we rose, and headed for Mexico.
