I have run the hobbit in DOSbox 0.7 which is used with Total commander, I have also tried using DFend v2 and run direct on windows.

In each case the following sequence happens:-

Choose monitor type Mono/Color

I have chosen both and then:

The title screen appears with the message "Press space to begin game"

Pressed space

New screen (no pictures, black screen) with message choose display width 40/88

at this point the programme freezes.

How can i get the game to run?

My System
Windows XP Home Edition
pentium 4 2.66GHz
512 DDR-SDRAM
80 GB Hard Drive
NVidia MXtm 440

Please help as I love this game

Thanks

When it asks you to choose display width you have to press either 4 or 8. After that it asks you if you want pictures and you answer with y or n and you start the game. I just run the game in dosbox 0.7.
