Default X-wing sound issues

I've been trying to get Star Wars X-wing (1993) to work in Dosbox .73 in Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx on a homebrew box with a Q6600, 3gb DDR and a Geforce 8800GT. Now, no matter what I do with the installation and settings for the game, I keep getting really choppy audio and awkward noises from my speakers. I've tried frame skipping and I've tried upping and downing the CPU cycles, but it doesn't solve a thing. Any advice would be nice.

Thanks, guys.

First thing to try:
Set the sound mixer to rate=44100 in dosbox conf.

Next: details ....? AKA we need moar plenty moar details about your sound setup choices for the game.

Next²: Ubuntu forums ... usually the best place to ask such stuff.

great news: step one worked perfectly. Took me a while to figure out where everything was in Ubuntu for this, but I got it! Thank you very much.
