There was an old shareware game that used to be on AOL Games around the time of the Exiles and such. It was an RPG game, with about 10 levels in Part 1. Which was free. You had to find the stairs down on each level, which was square and top-down, all of the level fitting in the screen. I remember either to beat the last boss or to get to him, you had to talk to a monster. And when you went back to the top level you could buy stats and spells (I think...that might be me thinking of Castle of the Winds, which came out at the same time.)
