Question

Hey I've downloaded dosbox0.72 and I have no clue how to start games. I've read the read me file, I've tried all the intros, I even read the description offered on this forum but I still dont get it.

I have DUKENUKEM game downloaded from emule, and I am trying to locate the exe file with dosbox.

the game is located at D:\GAMES\DUKEATOMIC\DUKE3D.exe

DOSBOX wont find that, dont know why.

Anyones help would be appreciated thanks. :w00t:

Ok, I've managed to start the game like this:

Z:\Mount d d:\

Z:\D:

D:>games\dukea\duke3d.exe

then it starts compiling some files and ends up with this: Error Illegal description JMP blabalbal(some numbers)

Correct it following these commands:

Z:>Mount d d:\

Z:>D:

D:>cd games\dukea

D:\GAMES\DUKEA>duke3d[/b]
Anyway the easiest way for you is just copying the game's executable (duke3d.exe) and pasting it onto the DOSBox executable (or what's the same dragging the former onto the latter).

1. Your first mount should be mounted as drive C. All subsequent mounts should use subsequent letters of the alphabet.
2. Never - EVER - mount the root of a drive. Security precaution, but one you should maintain.
3. D:\GAMES\DUKEATOMIC\DUKE3D.exe is not the same as D:\games\dukea\duke3d.exe. Which one is the correct location?
4. Names of subdirectories under your mount should not be longer than 8 characters. Games may have a problem with that.

I see you didn't read A Beginner's Guide to DOSBox. If you have read it and didn't understand something, please replicate the tutorial steps on your machine. If you still have problems afterwards, feel free to ask (and point out any parts of the guide which were problematic for you).

I hadn't noticed that he mentioned two different names but if he managed to access the exe like he said, "dukea" should be right. Also capitalization doesn't matter, neither in FAT16 nor in NTFS. But I'm pretty sure that the main problem was that he was running the game from a folder other than the game's. Most programs especially games rely on finding the game's files in the OS's current folder and if it's not the one the game is located, the game won't find its resources.

Yeah I've read the whole beginners guide and its the same as the dosbox intro...impossible to understand.
But anyways yeah I managed to run the game through the dosbox but still I cant play it because of some error.

Z:\>Mount D D:\

Z:\> D:

D:\>Games\dukea\duke3d.exe

and then dosbox tries to open the game, starts compiling some files and boom, error.

OH and yeah DUKEATOMIC and dukea are the same things I just renamed it afterwards.

Try to mount a C drive instead of a D drive, by changing the first D in the mount command to C. Also, in the mount command, change D:\ to D:\[folder], where [folder] is the folder you have the game.

Try this:

Mount C D:\Games
C:
cd dukea
duke3d

*Edit, LOLz, wrote this whilst MM was posting, same thing, bit more elaborate.

You didn't read my first post at all. Between the second and the third command you need a CD one to change folder. Do as I said in my first post or like Dosraider said, better since they say it's not advisable to mount whole real drives. Or again as I said just drag duke3d.exe onto the dosbox.exe.

Start from the second chapter of the guide and replicate the examples on your own machine. Don't try to do it all at once, start in a later part of the guide or hurry - it's more important to understand each lesson rather than get to the end faster.

What is the exact part you have problems with? Perhaps I can try explaining it better.

Like I said before, he first mount should be assigned to letter C. The letter of the real drive the mounted directory is located on is irrelevant, and mounting your games directory is better than mounting the entire drive, just like I said in the guide.
Furthermore, game executables should be ran from within the directory they are installed in rather than remotely - sometimes that alone is sufficient for the executable to refuse to run.

Try:
Mount C D:\games
cd dukea
duke3d

Finally, you keep saying it gives you an error message... post its contents. They'd give us at least a general idea what the real problem is.
