can some one please help me install fields of glory i have tried to install it and it comes up with some mumbo jumbo about not being able to install on windows.... how the hell am i ment to install it then .... i dont konw how to use dos so if i can help it i wont use it .... can some one please help me fiqure out how to install this damn game :help: :ranting:

THAT'S BECAUSE THE GAME WILL NOT WORK ON WINDOWS.

DosBox is pretty fool-proof method of running old games. A number of tutorials on it can be found stickied on the top of this forum, as well as in the Troubleshooting Archive, also here, just a bit above the stickies.

but but but but but ... IM USING 98SE .... so it already has dos on it ... what commands will i need to install the damn game in dos then .... do not get me wrong i apreciate the help u have all offerd me ... i have lernt from trial and error never to knock back any help ppl give u.....

First of all, you'll need to reboot your machine into MS-DOS.
It's worth having Norton Commander around your HDD then, great help in getting around, that one.

Enter the directory where you have the game, and then run the file you tried running in Windows.

thank you for the useful tip u shall give it a try even tho for some one such as my self the tryin to operate ms dos is like tryin to write a programe.... very difecult.

It's not far away... but that's why I recommended to use Norton Commander - it is much more functional then straight command line.

So, basically you need help with DOS commands?

Like Horseman said, reboot in MS DOS mode if it doesn't work directly with the compatibility options in 98. When in MS DOS, you have several things to check to make your games work.

It seems a guide was lost in the Troubleshooting Archive in the moving because I don't find it anymore... :blink:

I'd recommend you read Mr Creosote Guide to MS DOS. It should help you a lot about the points which are not about DOS syntaxes.

For the syntax itself, use "DIR" to switch directories (with full lenght and no mistakes. If there is a ~ in the name because of Windows, you must type it too!), "del" or "delete" to delete files, "deltree" to delete a directory, "move" to change a directory name or "copy" after creating a new directory to copy all the files to another directory and then "deltree"ing the old directory will do the same. Be carefull tough when deleting or deltreeing, it's irreversible in MS DOS!

Next, is the extentions. It's the 3 letters long extention after the . after the first (up to) 8 letters. They all have their funtions, but you'll want to search for .exe, .bat and .com specifically because that's those extentions which are program starters. Install.exe is usually also your setup program for old games after you install them. Newer games have setup.exe or something similar instead.

Then, there is wildcards. The most used wildcard is *. For example, if you type "DIR *.*", you'll see all the files in the directory. If you type "DIR a*.*", you'll see all the files beginning with a. The second most used wildcard is the "/?" command you add up to the end of another command. Example; "DIR/?". This command should give you an information screen on about every commands you can type in DOS, which is a great help and is the way I learned about all what I am talking about right now. In very rare case this command will not work, but it's either because it's not a genuine DOS command or because you should not mess with that command without knowing what you do.

With all this you should be alble to do whatever you wish, just say so if you need more help.
