Ok he just restarted older P4 computer and it wouldn't go back on. His dad said the motherboard is gone and he just got a new pc so he said I can salvage all that's not crap... here's what he has (that works at least):

- 768mb Ram
- 2.0 GHZ P4
- 256mb Radeon Card
- 80gb Hard Drive
- Case
- PSU
- Sound Card

What else do I need to repair it besides the motherboard?

You might want to check the bios chip on that board. It can often be replaced *whistle*. New chips can be ordered from the manufacturer, at least.

Check the PSU first.

Sounds like the psu killed the motherboard to me.

Does the PC actually power up? or does it crash? Do you hear the power supply? beeps? harddisk?

Harddisk are the most common cause of crashes.

Check for leaking capicitators on the mainboard ... Happens quite often with PIII and above

Does the mainboard still get power (usually there's a led)?

Take out all RAM modules but one, check if the pc powers, if it doesn't than swap the module with another ... easy way to check if your ram is ok.

I've rarely seen a CPU break down ... Usually it's the mainboard...

It can turn on, then the fan run super loudly and no picture comes up on any monitor. Could be the video card? I don't know, it's hard to say.
