I managed to get the same error, but I did not click on the right icon. When I click on "GameGFX.exe", it says something about not being able to find the CD. The right icon is the one named "Transport Tycoon Deluxe.exe", and you need to start it in Windows. Because it is made for Windows it won't work for DOS or DOSBox.

When i try to start the game by clickin "Trasport Tycoon Deluxe.exe" file, the command line just blinks and thats it. Running "TTconfig.exe" doesnt help either - the "Game Installation Error" appears which says "Unable to access Transport Tycoon Deluxe CD!".
I found the game requires this CD if you mess around with the TTDX Configurator.exe program (ttdpatch.cfg file). You will need to re-open the file in the configurator program and select Options, Use TTDX defaults.

As for the game not saving, I had this also but only because I navigated out of the default save folder. If it opens in the wrong folder, you will need to exit and re-open. Then when you save, the default save folder will open up and just change the save name for easy reference.

Anyone else find the map editor annoying by the fact that it doesn't let you generate flat terrain?.... I grow wary of flattening mountain after mountain...

Yeah, that must be it. I watched the tutorials once and it went crazy when a news popup came out just at the wrong time. The "hand" clicked on it and nothing else worked afterward. I noticed the hand got into the save menu and tryied to do something but it must have been very random because it wasn't intended to be done that way...

Yeah the tutorials are loco, and I also have to click at the start to get the blank screen to change to the starting menu. Whereas it appears automatically on Windows 98.
As for the auto save games, DISABLE THEM! they are a pain in the ** and fail for me every time thats why I say just to create your own save file in the default directory, don't try to navigate elsewhere.

Would this be a good game for me (a Railroad Tycoon ORIGINAL nut)

What does it add and/or expand on?

Or should I get Rails 2 or 3?
TT/D/TTDFW/whatever, is much more complex that railroad tycoon. Their is so much more, such as things you deliver, for example, iron ore to steel mill, to factory = goods, a valuable item that is only accepted certain times in certain cities/towns/vilages. Crude oil to refinery = goods, farm products to factory = goods, ect. Towns and factorys offer subsidries(sp), taking passangers from one town to another may pay 4X the normal amount for a year. How you transport them is your idea, train/bus/ship/air. Air is the fastest way, but expensive. Ships are slow, but cost a bit less, busses are quite releaible, but can only hold a small ammount, trains can hold up to 40 pasangners per carrage, but it takes time to fill them up. TTD is a great game.

Hey, I managed to get it to load, but then before any graphics or sounds appear, it dumps me back. I followed the instructions in the txt file. I have compatibility mode enabled, which lets me get it that far. Anyone know what it could be?

Are you trying to load Transport Tycoon or Transport Tycoon Deluxe for Windows?

If it is the second and you can't manage to make it work on your computer, I guess I'm clueless on how to make it work.

The second one, TTDX for Windows, was the one I was referring to.

Perhaps I should just get Classic Transport Tycoon then get the patch?
