I see no shield thingies. You mean the sword thingies in the 1993 Gold version? This is the 1987 original.

Oldest version also got the three swords option before combat.

What do you mean? Pirates! Gold also has the same option to choose the weapon before the combat if that's what you mean.

I tried the version hosted on Abandonia, with DOSBox 0.63 (as it crashes in 0.72, as it was reported a number of times here), but I experienced the same issue, plus some wacky colors during fights.

Try to minimize (Alt+Enter) and then maximize the dosbox window during the game. This helped me.

The only problem with this version that is downloadable here is that the picture of the ugliest governor's daughter is messed up when shown.

if i'm not mistaken, the game should include a map with exact latitude and longitude so we could use the sun-sight, where is it? without it, we are 'sailing-blind' here..

Found one and added it, although any map of the Caribbean would work.

you get one symbol per so many crew and while you duel the commander, they fight the enemy crew. So you can win if your crew overpowers his, or if you win the duel, or lose if you lose the duel or if you lose all your crew. After all, those 20 other crewmen are hardly going to stand by while you fight their captain, they need to be distracted
