No wine, no bird, no fox. Danny was pretty close, actually, I just missed his post at first.

I wouldn't really call Joan Aiken a girl's author. Unless having a girl as the main protagonist already makes a book a girls' book, which is nonsense, if you ask me. The Wolves of Willoughby Chase or Black Hearts at Battersea are good books to start with. Alternatively, if you like books with a historical setting, try her Bridle the Wind trilogy. Just don't blame me if you don't like the books after all.
