Listen it's the year 2006, if it didn't have 3D it would be a travesty and it would give me 50% less reason to buy a REMAKE, because what's the point of buying something that plays and looks exactly the same with only a few extras? One reason I bought Pirates! the remake was because I wanted to explore the world now that it was far more vibrant and interesting, rather I wouldn't want to stare at those hideous pixelated fat little blobs the settlers used to be.

It'd be a lazy and inexcusable way to remake Settlers if they didn't use new graphics.
Besides, who would buy anything that looks like it's from 1995? Almost nobody that's who, and especially for the fans, who've probably played Settlers II to death. If they don't get brand new sexy visuals then they'll most likely get bored of it even faster.
And yes, graphics can make it different and interesting, that's why I wasn't completely bored with Half-Life 2 or Doom 3.
