i can't get this game to work it says it can't detect a microsoft compatible mouse. any suggestions?

Gee, what a friendly post.
DOSBox is a very nice program, 100% Windows compitable, which helps you running old games on your modern pc.

DosBox is actually meant to work on Windows XP... and for the future, please remember to SWITCH YOUR CAPS LOCK OFF.
