Do you use OpenTTD?
If not you SHOULD do, a open-source mod for Transport Tycoon Deluxe, that adds MUCH more fun to the game, and makes the multiplayer part a bit easier.
That's the only tip i can give you.

I never liked mods. They're never right.

If you are looking to play the original TTD on multiplayer, then I guess you can't unless you actually have a lan. This game was created before IP gaming was even on the shelves. I think there is a program somewhere which simulate a lan for IP gaming, but I have no idea what would be its name.
