This is the worst of all Ultimas, even U9 was better, and that means a lot. This is in no way connected to Ultima, its more a jump and run. Its badly scripted, the quests are a disaster, and jesus, the memory manager thing was a total screwup. I wish this game had never happened!

Ultima VIII was heavily criticised by fans of the Ultima series since it came out, but, maybe because I played it before I got to know the rest of the Ultima games, I actually found this game to be very charming und special.
Sure it's different to the other Ultima parts, sure it has a lot arcade elements in it unlike the other ones, including the real-time combat, but training makes the master. And sure it has a lot of unfinisched ties in the story and a lot of, sometimes nasty, bugs which weren't still fixed with the patch. For that it offers a strange and unique world which quickly drew me into it's charm and mysterious mood which is perfectly supported by the music.

So, not being a die-hard fan of Ultima games though I love many of them, I don't think this is the worst game in the series but actually one of the best along with the two side-parts Ultima Underworld and Ultima Underworld II. And I played Ultima 9 through, too.
It's just a shame the promised addon The Lost Vale never came out for it.

Anyone know if it's possible to get sound effects to work in dosbox? I'm uisng vdmsound, but I only get the music.

Yep, just run the installer and change the sound configuration to match your
DOSBox configuration. Have you tried that with vdmsound?

No I haven't, I didn't know vdmsound was configurable..I thought I remembered just putting some files in the game directory.

I'll read up on it I guess!

Ok I messed around a bit and got it working, I didn't realize you needed to set the .exe to "run as vdms"...it seems to work great now, thanks alot.
