Autoduel was a hard hard game to get started (for me, at least). It was one of those games I played over and over again, trying to get some salvage out of the Arena and ever so slowly making minimal progress. I remember barely making enough money to recoup the money I'd spent on ammunition. Only once or twice did I make it out to the highway with a decent car. k:
[/b]
I remember when I started playing it, I did a lot of Amateur Nights to win initial cash, studying Mechanics in-between, then building a decent chASSis-kicker to clear roads around New York and pick up salvage to sell off. (Higher Mechanic skills == more money from salvage.)
My "play style" was(/is!) "exploratory", so I took my time learning the roads, going off-path, and keeping an eye on my power plant!! They say "fools rush in", and it DOES apply in Autoduel!

I remember discovering TWO important things:

(1) the tactic of ALWAYS keeping an eye on your radar, and as you get closer, CREEP toward your nearest target, in the MIDDLE of the road. With little practice, you eventually get to a point where ONE PIXEL's worth (or width) of the target appears at the edge of the screen, and they're NOT moving. Usually you're already lined up for a DIRECT HIT, so FIRE AWAY! I took out many cars this way, saving myself the hassle of prolonged combat, and the expense of repairs to car and self. (Admittedly, a sneaky, almost cowardly way, but when you're outnumbered or outgunned, you take any advantage you can to survive!)

(2) HEX EDITING for cash. Pure, digital cheating.
For the PC, the most essential MS-provided tool you can use is FC.exe (File Compare) followed by DEBUG.exe. ..and you need to know how to translate into/out of Hexadecimal. :]
If you wanna get a quick bout of shoot-em-up fun, HEX EDIT yourself a fortune, and make a set of cars, one for each Division at the Arena, and go Duelling for money and fame. Road-policing is for vigilantes, anyway.

"AutoDuel - Where the Right of Way goes to the Biggest Guns"
( .. though I hafta say, "brains and tactics" come in rather handy too! )

*** Drive Offensively! ***

Lu'no deLor'

"She's my armored limo, my Gallega -- Lg Power plant to pull her around, decent set o' guns to trash-talk, and plenty extra space. She may LOOK slow, but you'd be surprised!"
"Falcon is my mid-size 'speed' rig -- OilJet out back, to give 'em the slip; MGs both sides for 'drive-by'; and a heavy gun up-front to shoot through with. (I'd *like* under-floor compartments for... 'stuff'!!)"
"Then there's Puff, my scout vehicle -- compact, med power plant, good armor, twin front MGs, SmokeScreen out back, a little room to put salvage."

Holy crap!
I spent endless hours playing Autoduel on my Apple IIe waaaaaay back in the day! (I had the color monitor, though!) Man, what a fun game! If I recall, I always made far more money in the casino in Atlantic City than I did in the arena. Some of those courier missions were pretty lucrative, though. Like many, I really wish this game would be updated and re-released.

I remember playing this on my brothers atari when i was 7. This game brings back some happy memories and i highly suggest it to any gamer, as long as you dont mind the outdated graphics, but at an abandonware site you can kinda count on that.

I loved this game on the C64 back in the 80's. It's open endedness is what makes it so re-playable.

What's with the ESA protection? :ranting:

I see you guys talking about the games but because of this ESA issue, I can't download it. Any info on this ESA debacle?

Do they relly need to hold to old games like leech to theid buts.
I think esa protection to 10 year old games is stupid.
Even if there are sold almost nobody buys them.
Well maybe someone does but who.

Does anyone actually have this game? I think it's funny that it's protected but you can't buy it anywhere, from anyone. Origin doesn't exist, and Steve Jackson Games is awesome, but they don't sell this game...

anyway, if anyone's selling a used (or new LOL) version of Autoduel, I'm interested...

I just saw one on Ebay...even had the little mini toolkit that came with the game...and for a penny no less!!
Anyways, I played this game on my Commodore 64 and LOOOOVED it. Just downloaded it and am having just as much fun as I was in 1986!
If I could code, I would make a modern MMORPG version of this. Would be awesome and has potential to be really in depth with character creation and auto creation. NOT like that crappy Autoassault game from NC Soft.

I played this game to fruition way back in 1985 on my old commie 64c. This game was the first of it's kind that I had encountered at the time. It was pure rpg with a classic arcade car war feel. Not since this game has there been a similar title. Carmageddon and GTA have come slightly close but nowhere near as involved or entertaining. This truly is a classic and has stood the test of time, btw where has all that time gone?

Roadwar and Roadwar:Europa didn't have the same feel as Auto Duel so I won't compare them past the fact they're both automotive rpg's.
