I have one thing to say:
DUH

I hoped the nickname would make my sarcasm clear.

By NATO reporting name protocol, the Hagfish, were it to exist, would be a helicopter. But yes, I knew you were joking.

So nobody's got a guess on this one? Mrs. Butterworth knows what it is, but she won't talk...or will she?

Boing's V173 - pancake?

So it is a predecesor of the Black Bird!

Very close, but that's not the V-173. And there's no relation to the SR-71, as far as I know.

not true. it is only obligated to be a helicopter if it's of enemy design, z.b.:
'Startofortress' isn't a surface-surface missle, but the allready mentioned B-52 bomber.
and 'hornet' is a fighter not a helicopter.

D'oh! You're right, of course. The "Frogfoot" mention put me on the NATO-naming track. Now I look like an idiot.

Seb gets another one! In answer to your question, no, the XF5U never did fly. It only got as far as taxi tests before it was cancelled. The V-173 did fly, however. Also, those round things inboard of the props aren't jet engines; they're just intakes for the piston engines cranking those huge propellers.

The Score:
Sebatianos: 2
Everyone else: Nuthin'

Question #3: On what day did people hear the loudest sound in recorded history?

Wild guess: in 1883, when a vulcanoe erupted at Krakatoa. The sound was heard 5000 km away in Australia.

I have the odd feeling that that's right!

So the atomic bomb can bugger off. Go Krakatoa.
