This game does not seem to want to load for me. It always closes at the menu.

Are you using DOSBox?

Of all the games I got from abandonia so far, this is the one I've been playing the most.

I used to play the game a lot back in 90s and I have to admit it didn't loose any of it charm since then. Ok, graphics are obviously poor for nowdays standards, but everything else is still there - gameplay, exploration, quests, fun.

Unfortunately, the main fault I find in the game still stands (and why shouldn't it? ) - the lack of classic character levels or something similar that is typical for most of RPGs. What I miss the most is some increas in hit points, which here don't exist in the same way. I know that weapon skills (and all the other) increase the more you use them, but strength and endurance don't. You can buy your character the best equipment (though unless they have high strength and endurance in the first place, they will be under heavy load if you try to put plate armour on them), but when outnumbered by a group of enemies that are of above average quality, they will fare pretty much the same as they would've when you started the game. I was painfully reminded of that the other day when I tried to destroy dwarves in a mine.

I guess that making more healing potions would do the trick, but if it was a real situation, the reward wouldn't have been enough to cover the price of the potions/components.

This game is truly innovative for it's time. Thanks to you guys I was able to relive this game. I think the system is pretty logical, as you get older, endurance and strength decreases but skill increases, so it's up to you if you want to keep the old characters (with lower strength and endurace but compensated with high skills) or create new ones in the inns and get fresh young characters. The difficult parts of the quests are probably dragon hunting and Bahomet. I love finding villages I can accuse of witchraft... :P

So glad I found this place and this game (again). I have played a bit using both DOSBox .72 and then tried D-Fend Reloaded (which is a front end UI for DOSBox). I can play for a few minutes, but eventually everything freezes and I have to hard reboot my PC to get out of it. I have never gotten any sound to work either. I have tinkered with the different SB settings (sbpro, sb16, etc) through D-Fend but haven't found anything that works.

Anyone have any advice? I see that earlier in the thread someone mentioned disabling sound- I will give that a try to see how that works. Also see that there is a new DOSBox release today, so maybe that will help too. I would really like to get be able to play AND hear it at the same time, but I will suffer with silence as long as I don't get freezes too often.

Running this on a WinXp Pro SP2 box with onboard sound (no separate soundcard).

Update your drivers (graphic and sound).

DOSBox is a simple app that contains no drivers and so is simply unable to cause what you mention on its own.

Try running DOSBox without D-Fend. Frontends sometimes add their own compatibility issues on top of the emulator they are controlling.

I installed DosBox .73 and ran it that way. 2+ hours of gameplay with no crashes, no freezes, and no sound I can live with that.

I'm running it perfectly fine in D-Fend Reloaded, DOSbox version .73.

Anyways I have a quick question: I know you can press F8 to camp on the world map, but the manual says you can also camp by selecting "camp" from the party pulldown menu.

Now my party menu only shows "party info" and "change marching order" on the map, yet I can still camp by pressing F8. Anyone know why it doesn't appear in the menu?
