A friend who is sort of an audiophile and reviews audio equipment for a magazine told me that there is almost no difference from Bitrates of 192KB/s and above, and that any difference above 224KB/s can only be measured and not heard.

Tulac, I noticed a similar thing - I can't tell the difference between 820 and 840 kbps.

I have an audiophile friend, too. He builds his own speakers, has like 2000 CDs, and so on. The original audio nerd, I'd say. Anyway, he has a hifi that he can use to test CDs for their quality. So there's gotta be some way...

I prefer .mp3 format, due to the relatively small filesizes and the ease with which they can be played on different systems (Windows Media Player and things can't handle FLAC, you need to download stuff). I always keep the quality between 256 and 320 Kb/s though.

I'm quite proud of my audio system, I cobbled it together a bit, it consists of my PC linked to a large guitar amplifier, which is, in turn, linked to a hi-fi with two large speakers. The guitar amplifier introduces a bit of interferance as it's fairly old (though powerful) bit it's presence in the chain is necessary due to the cables I have available to me. btw nobody mentioned this before but 'variable bitrate' (dynamic bitrate?) is good for diskspace/quality ..depends on the song of course

well i downloaded a bathory album(FLAC) and the quality is waaay better
