Well, as I caused this topic, I shall speak now. There is a saying "Even cats didn't born just because". Maybe in your countries it sounds differ, but I think you understood the meaning. If developers of Hexen/Heretic imagined that symbol, they must have had a kind of base, a sample, from which they produced this unknown sign, which is discussed here. And, if that's so, I think we must search satanic realm to find something closer to this picture. Just because of game, which has evil elements. But, of course, again it could be just a product of someone's mind, even, by the way, produced from simple crucifix. Or from what Kon-Tiki found.
