My comp is almost the same as eric and I have the same problem...

I guess I'll have to abandon Ultima 8 - Pagan. On a side note it doesn't work on my 98 computer either probably because it's pretty darn old.

i think i played pagan once when i still used.. well, either 98 SE or ME.. and it worked nicely though..

That cannot be the case... after all the game is made in 1994!
So unless you are running the game on a 60 Mhz machine, the game will work

On 486DX2 with 66 Mhz the game still runs with flawless speed.
