That it is.

From Jesus on a 20$ bill to a guide on exactly how to disappear in America and never be found, that site has it all...but i'm not advertising!

Abandonia, home of the greatest abandonware games on earth! :w00t:

Due to a lot of not so nice relpies from some of the abandonia regulars to new people asking about things (mostly in the request section) there has been a short discussion about how the people here treat so called "noobs".

I have been frequenting abandonia and the forums for little over a year now (although I don't write as much as I should) and I can see a obvoius trend. Some om the admins/regulars are great, they reply in a nice and informative way and try to show some patience with the fact that not everyone knows the rules and such about abandonware.

However this topic is going to deal with the others, the ones who don't behave. There is quite a few people who seem to think that this is some exclusive club and that if you're not a "vip" it gives them the right to be jerks to you. I don't think that this is isolated to just a handful of people beacause the most usual critique I hear against abandonia is that it is "a great site but the people who run the forums are idiots".

To take two examples (which have been brought to my attention by friends) there is one guy whose signature is the guy from castelvania throing knives at the word "N00bs", while this is probably meant as a joke, many don't take it that way. Another thing is The fifth horseman, I know I shouldn't be naming but this seems to be the only thing the guy does. Go to the request section and look at this guys replies, there are so many cases of noob bashing when he could just as easily have said the same thing in a nice way.

If anyone feels that they agree with me and have been treated in a simmilar way or if anyone has a problem with what I'm saying, please write. This is an important matter and it needs adressing.

The person who wrote this post has a point.A good one.I`m still arguing with the_fifth_horseman.I guess the guy is ambitious to become an administrator to the site,so he`s throwing knives all over the place, and insulting people. It will not get him anywhere.YES, there are noobs, but none of the newbee members is aware of the site rules.I guess it would be usefull to put a rules-list at the beginning of the registrations,or even before the site opens. That way, everyone will be aware of their actions and administrators wouldn`t have that much problems. If i knew that I shouldn`t post e-mails and stuff I wouldn`t have post them, and the_fifth_horseman wouldn`t had to call me "supid" and i wouldn`t had to call him "stupid" back, as well as a drunk.I guess he has no patience with people, but that`s his problem.

first and foremost: spaces after punctuation marks! Your posts will be much more readable.

This is much better:

second: the reason why posting emails is both wrong and stupid is because the content of this forum (and many others) is public. That means anyone can read it, including the bots who crawl the web for email addresses to add to their spamlists.

finaly: every forum has rules. It is always a good idea to read them before you start posting.

You'll still get a speeding ticket on the highway if you go too fast, even if you claim to the police officer that you didn't knew the law and didn't see the speed limit. It might just actually tick him off even more, because ignorance to law is not an excuse. It's one of the first principles of law itself.

If there wasn't any rules at all on the board, I would understand and agree with you... However, there is a pinned topic about rules in about all the forums around here, so you just can't claim you never saw the rules because they are everywhere.

The biggest problem with noobs is that they either don't care the slightlest bit (or sometimes even do against on purpose) or don't have a single clue about netiquette (Wiki Link). Top to that an arrogant and sometime even plainly offensive behavior on the first post ever, this doesn't bode well for the guy when you're a mod and he's actually in need of help you're supposed to cover for him.

I'm going to be mod of Troubleshooting for about the second year now, if I'm not mistaken... And if you ask me, I'm growing tired of always needing to repeat the same thing over and over again when there is topics pinned in the Troubleshooting Archive made especially for that. With time, I came to the point, especially with guests, that if some noob is rude and spam and the like, I simply ignore them and only moderate the thread to make sure it doesn't go overboard.

You just can't win against the noobs. The whole computer system is made in such a way that any computer illiterate person can fire up a browser and do whatever they want. It would be heaven if you'd need to pass a special test like for your car before you can even begin to play around a computer... Unfortunatly, life's not made that way.

Well, Nace, I was going to say many things, but the other guys pretty much covered the gist of what I was going to post. But here's something to think about before you bash Abandonia's rules.

I've been to other video-game related forums in which the admins actually were power-hungry facists. If you found a site with really strict rules, you'd know it, i've been banned for double-posting before!

And to expand on what I said earlier, these are my reasons why I think Abandonia forums are fair:

-Many admins, the rules are kept in check most of the time

-Helpful members, these guys will go out of their way to help you, and they know what they're talking about.

-Tolerant admins, many people don't think so, but I know an intolerant admin when I see one...haven't ran into one for a long time, but they're much more unpleasant than The Fifth Horseman could ever hope to be. <_<

-And last but not least, above-average new member reception. When I first joined and looked at the gazzilion posts that everybody else had (because in past experiences, post count is how the power is distributed), I thought I was screwed. Nope, I went in, asked a few questions and started talking to people, and made a few friends while I was at it!

So, this goes out to every single person on this site, member, guest, admin, Kosta: Thank you for the welcome start!

OK.
But you should have started your sentence with a capital "f" .

I agree with that and with everything else too.

But no one will bother searching for the rules to read them. I didn`t notice the rules :w00t: So I guess that proves that not everyone can notice the rules.
Here`s my idea how things can be:
You click on the "forum" link or "discuss the game" - and there you have it - a nice civilized full screen rules list (i reccomend a short one too).
You put a few smilies to make it more pleasant.
That way, the "noobs" will know that they actually can be banned ,and maybe they will try terrorise some other site.
And everyone will be aware of the rules. :brain:
What do you think?

Not a bad idea, but that would cause a bit more coding on Kosta's part...why don't you ask him?

I agree. I didn't bother either when I registered. :P (as a matter of fact, even now the rules are a mistery to me, after more than a year )
