And I don't think there's any other way to identify stuff, at least without losing them. If you drop rings into a sink, for example, it sometimes lets you know what the ring is (for example, if the sink looks like something else for a moment, it was a ring of polymorph) but the ring disappears, so it's not very useful. You can drop stuff on altars to see if they're cursed or not, that's useful. You won't know anything else than if it's cursed, uncursed or blessed, though. You can also throw potions on monsters and the monster gets the effect of the potion. That way you can sometimes identify potions, but if it's a good potion, it helps the monster and that's a bad thing.

![]() The most frequent cause of death of most of my various characters, without counting some random stupid things, is starvation or death from eating something trying to solve his starvation.
Each time i am out of food, strangely every creatures that are potentially eligible as food turn to be either food killing my character on spot or food poisoning him etc... while in the beginning those creatures that seemed to be the same type could be eaten by my characters. I heard about wishing, but each time starvation hit the spot, my character is far from the time wishing is a possibility. I read prayer sometime can help, but if it helps it is only once, as after that it does not work anymore. Are there ways to fight starvation without being of very high level or is it just one of those random things created to kill characters unless you exploit some kind of game mechanism ?

![]() Ah, the ending... with the Amulet. The Wizard of Yendor has hired help, and hasn't had the Amulet for years (since Nethack 3.1.x I think). You must seek the Oracle, give him the money and listen to his words.
What, you don't want to waste your precious money? Well ok, here is what he'll tell you: “It is said that thou mayst gain entry to Moloch's Sanctuary, if thou darest, from a place where the ground vibrateth in the deepest depths of Gehennom. Thou needs must have the aid of three magical items. The pure sound of a silver bell shall announce thee. The terrible runes, read from Moloch's book, shall cause the earth to tremble mightily. The light of an enchanted candelabrum shall show thee the way”. |

![]() I think this is the game I've played for the longest of time in total and all I could achieve was a nearly win where I've offered the amulet ON THE WRONG ALTAR! Damn!
You hear Neiman and Marcus arguing! and someone shouts "Off whith her head!" (could it be the Queen of Hearts?) Also be sure to see if Schroedinger's Cat is dead or alive if you ever encounter a quantum mechanic. |

![]() Never eat something that isn't proper food or that you haven't freshly killed. A corpse that lies around for a while goes rotten. If you get food poisoning, you can cure it with a unicorn horn or by eating a rotten egg to induce vomiting. Praying will work if you're in favour with your God, but don't do that too often or you won't be.
