I have an old 98 computer, but it doesn't run DOS cause it's busted :-(
A lot of games that I remeber that should have been running at certain speeds just aren't cutting it with DOSbox. Why does the dosbox not put more into it?

Hey, I don't have anything against having a pure-true-DOS old machine with sole purpose of bring used to play games, but it makes little sense to me to run a 1,3 Ghz computer under true DOS just to play old games. That's all.
On the other hand, if that's your slowest and oldest machine -I myself am not that priviliged unfortuantely- it might be useful

Anyway, I'm still tweaking my Compaq Pressario 4810 P166 that I found in the basement at work k:

It takes a lot of sheer processing power to emulate a CPU. As a guidline, the emulating system has to be 4 times as fast and powerfull as the emualted one. This means that in theory with a fully optimized emulator you could emulate a 1GHz-proc on a 4Ghz machine.
However, the protected mode that many DOS-games use (this comes from the DOSBox-site btw) is vastly resource hungry and so the power needed goes up exponentially.

Myself I'm fighting to get a 486 to run. Found a pile of hardware (most old or broken) at work, but there was a 486 DX2/80 and a motherboard that supported it. Now, I also found out that there is another board that should support 486 DX4/100, but only Intel ones. Happens that I have one like that left from my old PC which ended up with a fried motherboard a few months back.

I know that running DOS on a 1.3Ghz is stupid, I put windows on it now. I just bought an old pentium 1 pc i want to use for DOS games. it has 166Mhz, 1.1GB HDD and 32MB EDO RAM. Dos 6.2 English. Also a CD-Rom drive at 24x speed.

I always feel a little lame whenever I read the machinery other people use. I feel so...behind the times. *sigh*
