well you can interact with ithems when the bag icon is activated, talk when the mouth icon is activated, etc

I bet it has something to do with the Joystick. Apparently, using Hook.exe, it will auto-detect a joystick and if you don't have one that the game recognizes, you might get hung up... I was also having trouble with it, as you explained. Sometimes a gamepad might not work, you might need an old fashioned joystick with two buttons.

Maybe you can try to press a joystick button during the opening credits. That should take you to the calibration screen.
