well ... i play more safe generaly ...

start off by building a militia (for exploring), a settlers (second city), a phalanx (usually starts with getting bronze working), yet another settlers (infrastructure), a garnary, yet another settlers (another city or infrastucture depending on the map) and then a temple ... and other than the militia i do that with every city i make ... and i keep my research as high as possable while having a positive money income or they hit zero

i start with tech rushing towards first philosophy and then railroads (for even better infrastructure between the cities

i've once with the russians on earth managed to build my first tank in 20 BC. while having cities all over europe, asia and northen africa

Hi, played civ1 on my computer a while back and worked fine. Now something odd is up. The game starts up fine but when I try and use the keyboard all I get are these symbols. Keyboard works in everything else but civ. Reinstalled the game and switched keyboards but still the same weird symbols. Hmm.

How about going to the Troubleshooting forum and reading the "Most common problems" sticky there?
