I didn't know that Civ. I could be edited? Don't remember seeing the option. Only hope this is not a cheat?

Civilization and Colonization, if I am not mistaken, use .txt files for configuration. As long as you know what you are doing and you know what the number after the 8th coma on a line do, you can do pretty much whatever you want.

Will open my directory and see what to do? May need more help...know the least bit about configuration of a game except what it says in the Menu

Civ2 got a .txt called rules where you can customize units, wonders tech, in a word everything. For Col its the same and it should by the same for Civ1. Anyway take care, make backups, check from time to time if game still works (you should open it and play a few turns in a developed game) and to change icons and other .jpg or .gif is harder and will make the game crash.

Thx u people for bringing it back to me..
As a token of gratitude, there's advice for newbies - military research - i found early game these two technologies essential - Wheel - it is soon-game tech and gives you great soon offensive unit - chariot, which has good attack and is fast. Later focus on Gunpowder, as fortified Musketeers are long time the best defensive untit around. Then you can wall your empire and focus on building and research easily. My record of making a space ship was y 1856, what was yours?
