We'r actualy not allowed to do that either.
If discoverd, they'll annihilate the account.
We've been busted for that once, but got off with a warning, since we honestly didn't know that wasn't allowed.

The point is; they want ppl who have a genuine intrest in what the ad is for, to click... and i don't blame them for that... If the advertisers doesn't sell anything, who is going to buy the ad-space?

If you are using an ad-blocker, it's up to you. If you feel bad about it, you are free to make a donation. It's a free world, and we offer a free service (on the user-end) with no costs attached in any way. No subscription you can buy or anything else, just free. On our side, it's not free however, so we'r trying to keep the site as good as possible, to gain the best sponsors, and increase the chanse of ppl making donations.

Bottom line: We will not try to tamper with any ads, nor tell you to click them (since we'r forbidden by the contract to do that). We'll not resort to popup or casino-ads. We will never get porn-ads. If you see something you might be intrested in, give it a shot, and visit the site. If you find something good = You'r happy, We'r happy and they'r happy. If you don't = We'r happy, they'r happy (since they recived an incommin hit) and You'r also happy, since you contributed to Abandonia anyway.

What about people with ad blockers?I have some sort of one on my other pc and I dunno how to turn that off.
Hi everyone! k:

Phew, 19 pages of discussion and I was seriously wondering what it was all about.

Ads? On Abandonia? No, had never seen one or at least couldn't remember. So checked again the main page and the forum, but no signs of something missing. Neither experienced a broken layout, nor found any "[AD]" substitutions by any popup blocker.

I'm using Firefox 1.5 and/or IE without additional extensions/plugins.
The only popup blocker that I have is built into my firewall (Outpost). But this one usually replaces advertising images with the mentioned "[AD]" text. Also there is a whitelist to exclude trusted sites and I had previously added abandonia.com to it!

By disabling the popup blocker or removing "googlesyndication" from the blocklist the ads would eventually show up. So obviously both the whitelist and the text substitution failed.
This is too bad because the only solution seems to be to permanently remove "googlesyndication" from the blocklist. That means that those google ads will chase me everywhere I go not only on Abandonia... Sigh, I don't like that! Hopefully I will find another solution for that problem soon.

To sum it all up: More and more "internet security" solutions have built-in popup blockers. Many user don't even know and care about this as long as everything works fine in automatic mode. I don't think that you can do anything about it.
But as those blocked ads literally vanish without any trace, it would help to know when and where those ads have actually been removed.
So is my suggestion: enclose all ads in a visual frame, add a border or something. Just enough to clearly show the visitors/users if the content (i.e. the advertising image) is missing!

To be honest: I read those hints ("Please support us by donating or clicking on the ads above!") on the download page but I skipped with the notion of it just being some sort of left-over from past times as I did't see any ads... Shame on me!

Anyway, keep up your great work!
As a big and long-time fan of classic gaming, I will look to how I can support you in the future. :bye:

Don't worry. A 5€ donation is equal to ALOT of ad-clicks. Quite a few seems to use this method nowadays.

Thankyou for your research/feedback however. Not much we can do about it, unless we host the ads ourselves on the server, and thereby bypass the hotlinking.

If I may be so bold to ask (correct me if told already), what are the monthly server costs?
