This can be stopped with any firewall.

Because, that people are good and... well... (I can't find a proper word)... responsible (from "respond", if I said right* ) by default, many of this victims sended their pin code to "server".
That's the real problem. I would say those people are very guillible and stupid, at best. And I am in a good mood today.

This is best described as a BKAC (Between Keyboard And Chair) problem. Any respectable Internet services will never ask for a credit card number directly on a public network. Second to that, the internet service is not responsable of such a thievery since the problem doesn't come from their servers or software, but from the client him/herself because they gave away their unique ID code...

Edit: Oh, and this is not called "hacking" per se. It's pure fraud.

The only hacking occur when your "friend" get the infos he need on the server, infos which are probably not supposed to be available to public. So, as you see, a PC itself is pretty safe from the method you mentioned.
I can't agree with you. I was drilled by such people-scanners many times, until I installed Agnitum Outpost Firewall. It can block all attacks such as scanning ports, DoS, and it can also block damn flash cartoons on the page (but not all, because those, who creates flash cartoons, are not stupid and they know how to overwhelm firewall :angry. So, without this firewall, my OS would be destroyed a long time ago and I won't sit here and talk with you. So you probably live in the country, or region, where people are not so bad. Or there are few of them.

Win95 did not make your computer faster. Exactly the opposite in fact. All the graphics in the OS made it far slower then DOS. The original release (the one I had) was so full of bugs and unstable it was not worth using over DOS. The second edition was far better and a worthwhile upgrade. Win98 was the same thing. Initial release was bad but the upgrade made it much better. WinMe was bad but never got better. Thank God for XP.

Nick: All firewalls, even the most basics, does everything you said except blocking Flash.

I myself use IE, but disabled Flash and Java. This mean that there is sometimes things in pages that I can't see, but then I know that the site I am visiting is not worth my time anyways. Any respectable site will see that all the visitors, would it be from any browser or any way possible, are able to visit the site and at least have access to the main content.

It's true, I don't think we have much pirates around here in Québec. But it is probably way more due to the fact that consumers regroup themselves here and law is on our side. Providers are entitled to supply informations on hackers so they can be arrested etc, everything adding up so newbie hackers are usually found on the spot before they become annoying, and real hackers don't just hack anybody just for the kick of it.

Listening to your words - Canada is a wonderful country! I was told about it many times, though. Jesus... If your police works so well, that it always watching hackers I was blamed a post above, then you are lucky. We have inverted situation here, in Russia. As my father said, cops in USA (he chose that country for example) looks like they are to make life of people better, and our cops (we call them militiamen, translating to your language. Very incorrect call, you may find.) looks like they work to make life of the people more bad. I think he's got the point. Our police (and the country too) is slowly moving towards hole with s**t. If we won't improve our country economy and organisation quick, we're going to have trouble. And after all we will surely get to the fate of Byzantium - we will collapse. But I hope to die in the whole country in that case, instead of... k:. But, of course, I don't want my country to fall to pieces. Anyway, back to my topic, right now I was scanned 10 or more times, while I was writing this reply. Hope nothing will happen to my OS.

Are you refering to random port scans that happen every minute or so? I have setted my firewall to not even bother me with those.

You really are paranoid.

I used to have 98. All I know is I could play games on it and there was inly a 1 in 4 chance of it crashing on startup. Then we got 2000 which worked well enought but we soon got XP. and XP is gay. No Dos compatibility, blue screens of death, random crashes, annoying smooth buttons (I BLOODY HATE THAT 'I'm a cute little start menu here for use by all the kind people in the world' TYPE START MENU! I liked the sharp corners...) Thank god for dosbox and VDMsound nowadays...

I like everything about XP besides the blue screens of death. Have had 18 of them so far. Have lost a ton of good games that way. Which is why I have written all my games to disks.
