I agree with you that how you surf the net helps, however protection is never enough, last time I went to a typing office and I found my USB key infected, without an antivirus it would have spread to my PCs, friends, parents in a very silent way.

It’s been a long time since I’ve used these programs, so I may be outdated.

But at the time, you could use Startup Manager like (MS Config) to analyze and disable annoying programs. With the German/Herman/Sherman Ashampoo WinOptimizer, you have the Startup Tuner. I know System Mechanic also has a similar function, but I've always found that WinOptimizer had a more user friendly GUI. Just like the German/Herman/Sherman TuneUp Utilities (now subsidiary of AVG - now subsidiary of avast ).
