And no, I am not joking. The problem is that the distance for the spinning device cannot properly attach to the cd itself, or the angle of the laser ramp cannot extend fully when right side up. Often, this changes when the device is upside down allowing for an odd but often effective fix. Some drives, however cannot eject the cd once its in there when upside down... so be careful. I would suggest a new CD drive if it can't eject it when upside down as that would get awfully annoying...

Well, in that case they should substitute you the drive, if it's in the warranty period!

Well, yes. My solution works with older stuff too, like drives sitting in CDW's warehouse in Chicago for three years after the warranty is void heh.

If you have the cdrom drive on separate IDE cable then you have to have the drive as master (not really a necessity but that's how it used to be)
Also a good idea is to run BIOS setup to see if you can autodetect the drive and if it is detected at all.
Besides that everybody else have said what there is to do... maybe next step is to take it to where you bought it and have them have a look and maybe test it.

Okay, the cd-drive was broken, so i got two new ones.

The first one caused the hard disk to disappear (luckily it was found after i removed the cd-drive).

The second one didnt worked, because the cd-drive icon was disappeared.

Do i have to install the cd-drive again?

I have a similar problem, but with a strange twist... my drive is new and came with the computer (2004 compac something or other).

At times the drive will appear as non existant... but at other times the drive is visable and more importantly works fine!!

When it isnt working there is no way to use it and directly restarting does nothing.

Anyhoo, Im taking it in to be serviced within the week (still under warrantee). So they better clear it up!

Right. My cd-drive is still not working.

I cant istall it by any means i know. The windows does detect it, but it doesnt istall it whatsoever. Plugs are placed in right place.

So, il ask once more: How do i install NEC Multispin 4x4 CD-Rom Changer?

that's weird. I never had to install any driver to make the cd rom works.

If you think it might be driver problem (it's win 98 after all) , go on the constuctor's web site see if you can find them.

if the bios / and windows see your disk, that mean the mater / slave is set properly. (or you won't see it)

If you don't see the icon in windows, make sure you bios see the drive.

As to not being able to read the cd , check the ide connexion. Every time i had this problem, it was becaue i hadn't put the cable correctly. (or the cd rom was broken. it's new and souldn't be right ?)
